Joseph Herman Dawe
Florence

It is with heaviest of hearts that we have to say good-bye to our much loved son, brother, companion, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. Surrounded by his loving family and friends, Joe passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Thursday, March 22, 2018, after a very brief illness.
He left Cape Breton at the age of 17 but never forgot his roots. He attended the Radio College of Canada in Toronto, Ontario and graduated as an Electronic Technologist where he met many lifelong friends.
Joe had a very adventurous spirit and travelled much of the world before settling back home in Cape Breton. Joe especially loved the summers at the cottage in Lake O’Law with his family and just enjoyed the simple things in life. Joe had a passion for motorcycles and travelled many places with his posse the “Hardly Boys”. Joe was a great craftsman and had a true talent as a carpenter.
At a young age Joe was a member of the militia and performed as a member of the International Tattoo.
Everyone who knew Joe knew that he always found the best in everyone. It was not unusual for Joe to go out of his way for people he just met. Joe left the world a better place.
He is survived by his parents, Hector and Rose Dawe, sister Kim (Darrell) MacNeil, nieces and nephews Kara, Kent, Colton and JD Dawe; uncles, aunts and many cousins; His loving partner Kathleen, and children; friends Calvin, Nigel, Carl, Jeff, Johnny, and so many others that have become family over the years.
He was predeceased by two brothers Freeman and Jackie, maternal grandparents Martin and Maggie Cashin and paternal grandparents Freeman and Ethel Dawe.
The celebration of Joe’s life will take place Monday, March 26, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Father Peter McLeod officiating.
Many thanks to nurses, doctors and staff of the Intensive Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, your care and kindness will always be remembered.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the War Amps of Canada.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at

To Rose, Kim, Hector and the rest of the Dawe and extended family, please accept our deepest sympathies and condolences for your loss. On behalf of his many Friday Night Hockey buddies and friends in Toronto, I wanted to share with you how Joe touched our lives. He did make the world a better place. His smile, lighthearted outlook and caring attitude made him a great friend who went out of his way to help people.

One very cold, very early winter morning, Joe, Calvin and I were traveling in a van in downtown Toronto. We were stopped at a red light and Joe spotted a homeless man sitting (and shivering) against a building, on the sidewalk beside us. We had
just gone to Tim Horton’s and Joe had a full, hot coffee and a breakfast sandwich in his hand. He opened the van door, quickly jumped out and with a smile and a kind word, gave the man his sandwich and coffee. I believe that kindness of spirit and concern for others defined your son, brother and our friend.

Imagine this, a hockey dressing room filled with our Friday Night hockey group. All long suffering Toronto Maple Leaf fans except for one Habs fan, Joe! For some (Habs) reason, he was always the happiest guy in the room! And would let us know it…and we let him play anyway! His friendly banter and kidding always added to the camaraderie and fun.

Last night, in our last game of the season, we celebrated Joe’s life and dedicated
the game to Joe’s memory and friendship. We miss him but know he’ll be watching.

May his spirit live in all of our hearts forever.

To the family of Joseph Dawe.....I knew Joe many years ago when he was a very young man and always thought him to be one of the kindest, happiest young men I had ever known...his smile simply lit up the room and his laugh made everyone in room happy. I rarely ever remember seeing an unhappy look on his face. He dated one of my daughters for a few years and we absolutely loved every minute that we spent with Joe and later on he built one of the most beautiful ice castles I have ever seen for my granddaughter's 1st birthday. He was a kind gentle man and my deepest sympathy goes out to all his family. The world will certainly miss such a lovely man and you are so fortunate to have had him a part of your life for this many years.

Ron Simek From Toronto

When I received a phone call today that Joe (Joey) Dawe had passed the phone went totally Silent. I just could not believe what my ears were hearing.Speechless.

To the Entire Dawe Family my Deepest Condolences.

Joe Dawe was an unbelievable person, and more so a Honest true friend. Joe and I had a lot of fun times together and we even did a Cape Breton trip from Toronto in 1992 which I will never forget.

No matter how much we saw one another or How little, when we talked on the phone it was like we had just seen one another yesterday. I will miss Joe's Ability to light up a room with his laugh and smile, I will definitely miss the phone calls and all the laugh's we had together that are forever in my mind.

R.I.P. My Friend
(I have sent pictures of Joe that I wanted to share with everyone)
