Charlotte Walsh Obituary

WALSH, Charlotte (Lottie)

Florence

It is with a broken heart that we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Charlotte (Lottie) Walsh, on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at the age of 95.  Mom was devoted to her family and cherished every moment she spent with them. She was married for 63 years to the love of her life, Philip Walsh, until his passing in 2010.

Lottie was born in Florence on August 7, 1928, and was the daughter of the late Simon and Sarah (Jessome) Rasmussen.  She was a devoted member of St. Stephen's Parish Church in Florence.

Lottie worked for a short period of time; however, her greatest accomplishments came from raising her cherished family.  Her greatest joy was seeing everyone coming for a visit, having a cup of tea and something sweet.  She welcomed everyone who ever came through her door and did it with such grace, love, and kindness.

Lottie was a member of the Florence Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, in the department where Phil served as deputy chief at one time.  They, along with friends and family, attended many events and celebrations at the fire department.  Lottie was also a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 83 in Florence.  One of her proudest moments was being selected for the role of Silver Cross Mother during Remembrance Day Services at the Legion.

Lottie is survived by her devoted children: her daughter Bonnie (Dan Devoe) and her son Wayne (Darlene Carey), eleven grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Lottie is also survived by her brothers Louis and Stephen (Mary) Rasmussen, sister Sylvia (Chuck) Porter, and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her long-time friend Josephine Clarke.

Besides her parents, Lottie was predeceased by her husband, Philip, in 2010; a son, Philip, in 2021; a daughter, Mary, in 2014; a son in infancy, Simon Percy, in 1951; and a great-grandson, Logan LeBlanc, in 2019. She is also predeceased by brothers Harold, Joe, and Percy and sisters Mary, Ann, Genny, Theresa, Viola, and Thelma.

The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Poulos for his outstanding care of our mother throughout the years.  A special thank you to the staff at Northside Community Guest Home for their dedicated and unwavering care of our mother over the past few years.  To the Cape Breton County Homemakers, we appreciate all your support while Lottie was home.

At Mom's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A celebration of her life will take place on Wednesday, April 24th, 2024, at 2:00 pm at J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines.  The burial will be in St. Stephen’s Parish cemetery in Florence.  There will be family flowers only.  The family asks that any donations in Lottie’s memory be made to the Veteran’s Unit at Harbour View Hospital through the Northside Hospital Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.

If life is like a candle bright, death must be the wind.  You can close your window tight, and it still comes flowing in.  So I will climb the highest hill and watch the rising sun, and I pray that I don’t feel the chill till I’m too old to die young.  ~Moe Bandy~
