John Robert (Bob) McGean
Sydney Mines

It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of John Robert (Bob) McGean on Saturday, May 2, 2020.
Born in Sydney Mines on November 1, 1932, he was the son of the late Jack and Viola (Jessome) McGean and was the last remaining member of his family. He was a wonderful and respected husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean (Morgan) and sons John, Sydney Mines, Sheldon (Linda), Florence, Adrian (Stacey) Scotch Lake, daughters Diana (Frank) Sydney, Sandra (Kevin) Sydney Mines, Colleen (Gary), Sydney Mines. Bob was predeceased by his brothers Lawrence, Doug, Gordon, Eddie, Melvin and sisters Jean Merritt, Shirley Devoe, Mary Dormiedy, and Madonna Brown.  Also left to mourn their beloved “Poppy” are his 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 1 great great-grand child and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was a true and proud coal miner for 39 years before his retirement in 1991.  He had a knack for restoring and fixing things and always had a hammer or a paintbrush in his hand, he was our Mr. Fix it!
In his younger years he would be found fishing or just spending time outdoors. He loved camping in Ingonish, Englishtown, Black Rock and later in George's River with his wife Jean and family.
Bob was that special kind of person that kids gravitated to, everyone who knew him, loved him.  He was a kind and gentle man of few words especially during his later stages of dementia.  The wonderful staff at the Northside Guest Home loved him immediately because of his sense of humor and the sweetness he brought forth.
Thank you to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital who treated Dad with dignity, respect and compassion. Special thank you to all the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home for the kindness and compassion they showed our Dad.  You all loved and treated Dad as if he was family, for that we are truly grateful. Donations in his memory may be made to the Northside Guest Home, 11 Queen St., North Sydney.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of Bob’s life will take place and be announced at a later date, in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
