Bernadette (Bernie) Whitty
Ingonish

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother Bernadette (Bernie) Whitty, who died peacefully at Highland Manor, Neil’s Harbor on September 23, 2020 at the age of 98.
Mom was a member of St. Peter’s Parish Ingonish. She was a warm and caring soul who devoted her life to her family; welcoming everyone in for hot tea and sharing biscuits, bannock, cookies, pies or a big pot of stew with her yummy “Duff”. She enjoyed the simple things in life. Soap opera’s, playing cards, Baking, trips to town and playing Bingo. The family remembers her in the winter at the Whitty shore, letting the kids warm their toes after ice skating and many times she lost her wedding band while throwing out the dish water.
Mom is survived by Daughters; Janie (Billy) Fitzgerald, South Harbor, Millie (Billy) Scott, Martha (Jim) Dunphy, Marion (Ronnie) Pearson, Mary Hawley, Donna Whitty and Alice Whitty, all of Ingonish, Brenda (Ernie) Wells, North Sydney, and Leisa (John) Syms of New Glasgow. Sons; William Whitty and Greg (Kim) Whitty, both of Ingonish. She is also survived by 33 Grandchildren, 38 Great, and 19 Great Great Grandchildren with another 4 on the way.  Mom is also survived by many special nieces and nephews whom she loved to get visits from. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Ambrose, whom she was married to for 67 loving years. She is also predeceased by her son Brian, sisters; Helen, Martha, Rachel and twin sister Bridget. Brothers; John, Jim and Rob. Granddaughter Tanya Pearson and sons-in-law, Tommy Hawley and Barry Hebb, along with a son in infancy.
Mom moved into Highland Manor almost 6 years ago which became her home away from home. She shared a room with her friend Hannah for many years.
We would like to thank the Highland Manor nursing staff for their unforgettable care and compassion and answering every bell at her beckon call. To the housekeeping staff for going above and beyond the call of duty, heating towels and blankets, helping her with calls and making sure she was safe and comfortable. The Dietary staff for all of Mom’s great meals, sweets and hot tea, along with always making our family feel welcomed during special occasions and daily visits. Thank you to the recreation staff, past and present for offering fun times and her favorite, Bingo. To all the entertainers that came and shared their love of music. To administrator Bernadette Dixon and all the Doctors and medical staff involved with her care.
Cremation has taken place; a private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Highland Manor Fund, North of Smokey Palliative Care, or a Charity of one’s choice.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
