Deon Durnford

We’d like to celebrate the life of Deon Durnford, proud veteran, father, husband and Newfie, who loved to hunt and laugh. Deon always filled a room with his humour and infectious smile. He proudly served his country in back to back tours in Bosnia with the PPCLI, and on various military bases all across Canada, next to his military family, friends, and comrades. He is loved unconditionally by his wife, Paulette, his daughter Robyn, step-son Ryan(Chelsea), along with his father Samuel Durnford(Audrey) and late mother, Vera Durnford. His hunting buddies and brothers, Mike, Barney and Jamie will get a big moose for Deon and their late brother, Frank. Sister-in-laws, Darlene, Kimberly, Yvonne, and Diedre will help make the moose stew. His many nieces and nephews will fondly remember him as the uncle who always showed up with a good story and the biggest hugs.
Deon loved his wife Paulette and daughter Robyn with his whole heart. He was a man who would give anyone the shirt off his back and cared immensely about his family. He touched the lives of everyone he met and taught his family the value of helping others before yourself. He gave the best ear scratches to his cats, Winchester and Kimber.
Deon, 46, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 6, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital palliative care unit. There will be no service, and his ashes and memory will rest at home with Paulette until her passing, at which time they will be spread together at his favorite hunting spot, Annieopsquotch Mountains, in his home town of Burgeo, Newfoundland .
In lieu of flowers, the Durnford family requests donations to be made to the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association in memory of Deon at

Hi. My name is Stephen MacLennan.
I was a friend of Deon's. When I was posted to Petawawa On. We hit it off right away, when he told me he was from Burgeo NL. because my Grandmother was from there. We use to hunt and go shooting together regularly. Unfortunately we lost touch after I was posted out.
I retired in South Bar 25 minutes away from you not knowing he was in Cape Breton. So with great sorrow I send my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Please find comfort in the joy he brought to his friends and of course family. He and your family will be in my family's prayers.

Stephen MacLennan and Family.

I am saddened to here of Deon's passing. I served with him in the PPCLI and we did a couple of tours overseas together. We lost touch like a lot of us former serving members do but I remember him well. He was a good soldier, always proud to serve his country and will be missed by all of us. Stay low Deon, and keep moving.

I was so sadden to hear of Deon's passing. My deepest sympathies to all his family. Deon would stop by the Ticket Counter to say hi on his way back from visiting Burgeo and to ask after Mom (Maggie). My fondest memories are of him as a little boy. His mom, Vera would lift him up to kiss him with the exuberance that only Vera had! She loved her boys. May you all take some measure of comfort in knowing that he is with her and Frank. Again, my deepest condolences.

This hits hard my brother. I will never forget our times, our laughs and our chaos. Always good man and even better brother. Until Valhalla. Rest easy, your watch is done.VP
