Carmen Francis DeMarco
Sydney Mines

The greatest love story of 68 years has come to a beautiful ending. Carmen and Ethel Mae are spreading their wings hand in hand and flying high, sharing their special kiss. Together they can watch over and be with all their children and the entire family.
“When tomorrow starts without us, remember we are near. For we are happily together with no more pain and tears. We are forever in your hearts, so be kind to each other and continue to share the love for one another as we shared with you.
Love you.
Me too.”

We are sad to announce the peaceful passing of Carmen Francis DeMarco, age 91, on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sydney Mines on April 11, 1927, Carmen was the son of the late Nicholas and Mary (Yafollo) DeMarco.
In his early years Carmen worked in the coal mines from the young age of 15 until he retired from Devco at the age of 57. He could still recall all his co-workers by name until his final days. He enjoyed many hobbies such as gardening, woodcarving and time spent with his loving family. He could also be seen uptown, parked at the corner with many of his buddies. Carmen and his wife enjoyed going for “ice cream” drives and shared a special kiss every time they met, right up until her final days.
Carmen is survived by his loving children; Carmelita (Brian MacLeod), Marie (Bernie MacCuish), Brenda (Lou Marinelli), Greg (Roberta), Rayfield (Valerie), and John (Manon). Also left to mourn are his grandchildren; Carmen, Theresa, Billy, Bernie Jr., Nickie, Jeff, Ryan, Laurie, Shane, Belinda, Tammy, Brad, Vickie, Jillian Mae, Jeff, Chris, Nick, Andrea, Nicholas, Joey, Marie, Christopher, Bradley, Melissa, Faye, Ray Anne, Mary Crystal, Adam, Nicole, Brenda, Candice, Christopher, Lee and Garrett, several great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, sister Nora (Nanny) DeMarco, sisters-in-law Bernice Devoe and Carolyn Farrell, brothers-in-law Elige Slade (Fran), and Sheldon Slade (Sheila).
Besides his parents, Carmen was predeceased by his loving wife Ethel Mae (May 4, 2018), sons Stan, Georgie, Russie, and baby Ruth at birth, grandchildren Dion DeMarco and Tea MacCuish Reddick, brothers Tony DeMarco and Russie DeMarco, sisters Rose (Bob Clark), Lena (Pat Kockocki), Mary DeMarco, and Cecilia (Stan Jockomack), brothers-in-law George Slade (Marg), Ray Slade (Beatrice), Major Slade, Lawrence Slade (Cindy Mae), and John Farrell, sisters-in-law Molly (Gerry Arsenault), Marg (Harry Eakhart), Florence (Lorne Stevens), Ruby (Frankie MacDougall), and Emmaline (Donnie LeRoy).
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise, and the nurses on 4 West at the Northside General Hospital for their kindness and compassion.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of Carmen’s life will take place Saturday, May 12, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Family Church, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carmen’s memory may be made to the Miner’s Memorial Manor Bus Fund, or a charity of one’s choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at
