Bernard (Bernie) Doyle
Sydney Mines

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Bernard (Bernie) Doyle, on Monday, January 28, 2019.  Bernie passed away peacefully and with dignity at home, surrounded by his family.
He was born on May 3, 1963, to Edward and Nora Doyle of 16 King St., Sydney Mines. Bernie attended the Youth Training Center (YTC) in Truro from 1972 to 1979.It was through the persistence and insistence of his mother that the late Dr. Tom McKeough secured his placement at the residential school. His restless antics and escapades influenced the local authorities that perhaps he needed more formal education.  The Sydney Mines Fire Department will always be grateful to him for the new garage doors.  Bernie learned many life skills and social skills at the YTC that served him throughout his adult life, living and working on the Northside.  He took pride in his work at the Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society for over 30 years.  Bernie was well known for attention to detail when refinishing antique furniture.  He took great pride in his work regardless of the task, although he was not fond of fluffing flowers.  Bernie was never held back by having Down's Syndrome.  He was proud of his physical strength and athletic ability.  He participated in the Special Olympics and earned a black belt from East Coast Tae Kwon Do Martial Art Facility.  He served the parish of Immaculate Conception by doing the collection at Sunday mass and working alongside his father in the St. Vincent De Paul.  He loved movies and enjoyed meeting people at the movie theatres in Sydney, and movie rental stores in Sydney Mines.  His family is grateful to our extended family, the parish of Immaculate Conception, his friends and neighbors on King Street and the community of Sydney Mines for sharing in the joy and light of Bernie's life.  Gratitude is also extended to the professionals, paraprofessionals and home care specialists who cared for and loved him as his health deteriorated, especially Dr. Andrew Wawer, long time family physician, and Dr. John D. Ritter with the Cape Breton Palliative Care team.
He is survived by his mother Nora (Young), siblings Martin (Sharon), Jo-Ellen Lyslo (Robert), Michael (Susan), Paul (Debbie), Dr. Mary (Nahman Korem), Teresa Lunn (Michael), Vincent (Lori), Camilla, Eddy (Shauna), Angela Burton (Chris), Peter (Darlene), Andrew (Shauna), Donna (Townend), his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Bernie was predeceased by his father Edward, brother Jack, sister Mary Colleen, sister-in-law Janet (Power), nephew Nathan and his loyal, loving four-legged furry friend Scout.
Bernie was a man who lived a simple life with joy and a love for God; an example for all!
Visitation for Bernie Doyle will be held on Friday, February 1, from 5-8 p.m. in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines.  Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines with Father James Oliver and Deacon Michael Doyle officiating.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernie’s memory may be made to the Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society.  Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Bernie. I have many fond memories of him growing up, one of my favourites was the bond between him and Scout (one of the many family dogs). I can still hear him saying ‘ere cout’. He will be missed by all who knew him, he was truly one of God’s children. Condolences to Nora and the rest of the Doyle clan (far too many to list)!

We are so sorry to hear of Bernie's passing. He was a very special person and everyone was so better off for knowing him , now is an angel in heaven. Knowing Peter, from VON, excellent nurse and was special when he came to the house, like all your children, had a wonderful upbringing in faith and examples, and may God surround you all at this difficult time and cherish all the memories of Bernie.
