Derrick Aubrecht
September 9, 1956 – February 5, 2019
Sydney Mines/Big Bras d’Or

Ivan Derrick Aubrecht was the eldest son of Rudy and Shirley (Moore) Aubrecht (both deceased), born on September 9th, 1956. His siblings, Mellodee (Earle (deceased)), Cordell (deceased) and Yolanda (Shane) had a special place in his heart.
Derrick was born and raised in Sydney Mines. He was an avid participant in many sports throughout his youth and remained active during his life. Derrick met his wife, Donna MacKinnon in 1977 and they created an inseparable, life-long journey from that point forward. With that relationship he gained additional family and life-long friendships with Dena, Ian, Gary and Colleen. Derrick and Donna resided between Nova Scotia and Alberta through the years, eventually settling "on the hill" in Big Bras d'Or in 2014 when Derrick retired from his teaching career at SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology), of which he was a graduate of Instrumentation.
A happy man, Derrick found joy in the simple things; an evening at the Pub with friends or a Sunday afternoon watching football on the sofa. He had many close personal relationships; once you befriended Derrick, you had a friend for life. He cherished the outdoors and brought magic to his many gardens over the years. He and Donna enjoyed numerous road trips across Canada, and embarked on many memorable camping trips with their family to British Columbia. Derrick enjoyed private walks through the woods on his property and took pride in restoring his old farmhouse. Always a knowledgeable man and life-long learner, Derrick enjoyed sharing his wisdom with others through stories. He took meticulous care of all of his possessions and everything Derrick did was done thoroughly, correctly and with care.
Derrick's two daughters and three granddaughters, Marianne (Adam), Maia and Violet, and Bretony (James) and Adelynn were his pride and joy. They enhanced his life greatly and it is immeasurable how outstanding of a Dad he truly was. Derrick always joked that he was to be forever surrounded by women (even his cat, Kiki).
Derrick's nieces and nephews, Troy, Rudy, Patrice, LaTasha, Chatham and Tyler each had their own unique, endeared relationship with him. Derrick treated them each as his own, offering a hand up, comradery and advice no matter what.
On February 5th, 2019, Derrick's journey through life came to its end, surrounded by "all his girls" and in the hearts of all who knew him.
For those wishing to pay their respects, visitation will take place on Friday, February 8, 2019, in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home in Sydney Mines from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Celebration of Derrick's Life will take place on Saturday, at 2pm in Carman United Church in Sydney Mines, followed immediately by a reception at the Sydney Mines Firehall until 5pm.
Donations greatly appreciated and can be made to The Cape Breton Cancer Patient Care Fund, c/o Tom MacNeil, a non-profit near and dear to Derrick's heart.
Out of respect for allergies, the family asks that all friends please attempt to refrain from the use of any scented products.

Dear cousin Donna and Family. We’re sending love, prayers and healing thoughts from your west coast cousin and family. I will never forget the hospitality and love your family extended to us on our visits to Calgary. Upon rising Derrick would be in the kitchen cookin up a huge breakie to start our day with - while you would make sure we were familiar with the whereabouts of places on our agenda, prior to heading off to work, and when we got back to your home at the end of the day Derrick would be flashing up the Bar-B in the back yard where we’d finish off our day with stories and laughter of times gone by and yet to come. I feel so blessed to have had that time to get to know Derrick and see how systematically you both worked together in life - it was so beautiful. God speed Derrick - love you Donna.

Dearest Donna & family, We cannot express deep enough sympathy and sadness at the loss of your beloved Derrick. We remember his ready smile, quick wit and big heart serving up laughter, good food and generosity at gatherings here in Calgary. The two of you always made everyone feel "at home" and welcome, no matter the time or circumstance. Proud father and grandfather, wise teacher, brave patient and enduring soulmate... take hope and comfort that his vibrant, laughing spirit will continue to warm all your hearts and lives in the days ahead.

Derrick had a rich life because he was blessed with a wonderful, loving wife and family and, luckily, had open arms and a smile to welcome so many of us in so that we could call him our friend. He always seemed to have a contentment and peace about him that allowed him to live, love and laugh along the path of his happy life. Our hearts are broken for you Donna and for all of his girls, family and friends. He will be very dearly missed and was widely loved, a testament to the kind of wonderful man he was. Our love.

Dear Melloddee My deepest sympathy during this very difficult time. I did not know your brother but as I am reading through the notice and as well as through your stories about him, I get the feeling that he was a kind and gentle soul who always put family first. He seemed to be a man who enjoyed the simple things in life such as the annual Superbowl with family and friends. What I have heard people say in the past is that he is an angel now and will continue to look after his family and friends from up above. May you be comforted by the many memories that you have of him. Prayers and positive energy are sent your way, my friend

Donna liked to call him Superman. I understood why. Despite years of arduous chemotherapy, Derrick always managed to be positive, upbeat, brave. He was super in other ways. I always marveled at his vast knowledge¬—of electronics, electricity, you-name-it. His explanations of complex subjects would often fly right over my head; I would smile and pretend I'd understood a tenth of what Derrick had said. I loved the wide-ranging conversations we would have: baseball, the state of the world, the remarkable charms of Donald Trump. Jan and I loved to stop for tea and conversation after our morning walk to Dalem Lake. Things can never be quite the same with Derrick gone but we look forward to carrying on the tradition and remembering what a remarkable man he was, that Superman of yours.

Dearest Donna and family. My heart goes out to you all. There are no words and such a loss is heartbreaking. Derrick was a wonderful person and touched so many peoples’ lives in so many ways. He enriched others by knowing him. You and he had the love story of dreams and sadly most great love stories have a tragedy and this great loss certainly is. The blessings are however plentiful through your beautiful children and grandchildren. Derrick is no longer suffering and I pray that your decades of love and memories will sustain you and your girls as you go forward. Sending love and sincere condolences.
