John Leroy Gibbons “Gibby”
Sydney Mines

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to all, John Leroy Gibbons, better known as Gibby.
Dad enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at the family spot in Boisdale.
He owned J&J Autobody for over 40 years with his friend Jimmy Young before retirement.
Gibby really enjoyed horses. He spent 45 years in the sport of harness racing. He has had many good horses throughout his career, but his favourite would have to be Beaully Katherine. He was inducted into the Cape Breton Horseman’s Hall of Fame in 2012. His passion for horses was passed on to his children and grandchildren as they all showed and some continue to show throughout Cape Breton.
Gibby was like a second dad to the many children who lived on Brooklyn Avenue. His house was always a welcome place in the neighbourhood.
Dad was a generous man who always helped when needed He would give you the shirt off his back. He also had a great sense of humour and loved getting people going (mostly Mom).
Dad & Mom we’re married for 48 years before she predeceased him in 2012. Together they raised six children, who he was extremely proud of; Gail (Johnny) Murphy, Port Hawkesbury; Deanna (Andrew) Lennark, Dartmouth; John (Sharon), Sydney Mines; Suzanne (Scott) Tobin, Greenwood; Cheryl Gibbons, Kugaaruk, NU & Bonnie (Andrew Lewis), Balls Creek
Poppy had seven grandchildren that were his pride and joy; Jennifer (Michael), Shawn, Jocelyn, Jacob, Katie, Maggie & Jill.
He also leaves behind his brother Bobby, and sister Kay as well as many nieces and nephews.
At Dad’s request, there will be no service, visitation only. Visitation will be held in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St, Sydney Mines, Wednesday, October 30, 2019, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Family Flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name to the Canadian Diabetes Association and/or the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Words of comfort may be sent to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com

Please accept my sincere sympathy on the passing of this wonderful man.
I remember the time my car stopped outside Baddeck. My sister, son and I were quite concerned how we would get back to Sydney Mines. Along came Mr. Gibbons and generously piled all of us in his vehicle and took us safely home. He knew us from when we lived on Brooklyn Avenue! A real neighbour in a time of need!
May God bring you comfort at this time!
Blessings and prayers.

Dear Gail, Kay, Bobby, and all loved ones of my cousin Johnny,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences at this terrible time.

My parents Loretta & Jack had a special place in their hearts for Johnny. You might have heard over the years that on their wedding night (February 2. 1946), they had to sleep at Aunt Elvira's house...in the same bed as a very young Johnny and Bobby. Well, it turns out that one or both of the little boys wet the bed. My parents talked (& laughed) about that night many times.

I wish all of you comfort and peace.

Much love,
Heather

heartfelt sympathies to each and every one of you with heavy hearts from Irene(Rini) and I and family - throughout all those years there remain a multitude of precious memories with John in a variety of ways from hunting - fishing and 50,000 other avenues of interests and contacts - in our younger years, like most Cape Bretoners, we did 'battle' several times over practically nothing - however the 'growing' pains subsided as we moved on in different directions and locations in adult life yet there was always the 'family' greetings when lucky enough to be home - John was indeed all those good things as stated by his offspring in the obituary and in spite of over half a century of knowing him, we have really only had one true disagreement which did not rest well - it was my hope that we could have made amends before we "departed" as there was no real animosity here and my feelings of this old brother-in-law will remain favourable - truly one of the most colorful characters in my whole lifetime to date and am sending love and best wishes to all his family - honestly I would have to say I truly liked him a lot - Love and Condolences to all you 'kids' and relatives - I will miss him much - love, Uncle Tom Vickers

To the family, I am so very sorry for this loss. Gibby was one of the best horsemen I knew and was a wonderful man. When I got my horse, a standard bred he gave me his phone number and said to call any time I needed any advice on how to train him for saddle after a life of trotting. He was very patient because I did call many times. Not once did he mind.
I grew up in his yard with his horses and pony. I learned to ride on the pony. He was never anything but kind to me.
I respected him not only as a man but as a kind person who would offer any help you might need. Ride high Gibby. You will be missed. ♥️

Bobby and Kaye:
So sorry to hear of Johnny's passing. He had to be the ultimate character for all of us growing up on Brooklyn Ave. I have many good memories of him . I was sharing many of them just this past summer with his cousin Keith. May you have a real fast car when you cross those pearly gates.

My heart is saddened to hear of Gibby's passing. We had many great memories over the years. One of my favorites was bringing the kids over to see a new foal. Momma wasn't happy having us that close and pinned us in. I thought it was kind of funny she wanted to keep the kids..the kids didnt see it that way. One word from Gibby and the horse backed up and let them out. I imagine there are a few gathered together doing some horse talk.Angie Collier would be one of the first to greet him. My deepest condolences to all the family

So sorry to hear of Uncle Johnnie’s passing. He was truly one of a kind. His kindness and generosity was like no other. He always opened his home and made everyone feel welcome. We spent many Christmas days with the Gibbons family growing up. My most favourite memory of uncle Johnnie was having The privilege of a “fast trip” around the Cabot Trail in the Suburban, there was no shortage of laughter and fun. I wish I could be there with you all tomorrow, you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Stay strong and support one another.

The world is less for the loss of Gibby. I met him for the first time at a horse show 32 years ago, and I can honestly say, he always met me with a smile - even when he was giving me hell for doing something stupid. He will be missed.
My love and prayers are with his family.
