John T. (Brogie) Brogan
Sydney Mines

We regret to announce the passing of John T. Brogan, age 66, on Thursday, November 28, 2019, at the Northside General Hospital, after a short battle with cancer. John passed peacefully with his fiancé Kathy Carey, her sister Rita Astephen, and her daughter Ericka Carey by his side.
Born in Sydney Mines on March 15, 1953, he was the son of the late Patrick and Rebecca (Walsh) Brogan.
John worked for 11 years for Hinchey’s, then on the lobster boats. He loved to spend time at the Sydney Mines Legion, Branch 8, where he was a member. He also loved to go to the Casino with his fiancé Kathy.
John was an avid bowler and dart player. He loved to get a good deal in the flyers, and he always had a smile on his face. He liked to drink Sambuca with his daughter Ericka, who he called Sambukie.
He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his fiancé Kathy Carey, her children, who John thought of as his own; Bart, Bonnie (Larry), Ericka (Devon), and Taylor (her daughter Brooklyn), sister Helene, grandchildren, who he thought of as his own, Jacob (Clem Kadiddlehopper), and Meadow (Banana Head), cousins Debbie Penny, Michael and Gerard, and nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased a brother in infancy.
His family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Wawer, and the nurses of 5th Floor, for taking such good care of him. We can’t say enough. God bless.
A celebration of John’s life will take place on Monday, December 2, 2019, at 10 am in Holy Family Church, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at

                                    He threw his last dart,
                                 He played his last machine.

Dear Cathy & Family, I am so very sorry for your loss, it was such a shocked to hear of John’s passing. We grew up together on Fraser Ave., and he and Helene, Paddy & Becka were like our extended family. We always had get togethers at either mom & dad’s ( Russie & Bea) or at their house. Many times during the summer when we were little we would visit their cabin in Barrihois I believe it’s called. Very humble people, caring and loving & compassionate. John visited our house growing up on a regular basis, he was one of us. Lots of stories & laughs. Back in the day neighbours visited, hung out and watched over each other children. Wish we had those days back. John (Brogie) will be greatly missed by his loved ones, and also other lives he touch, especially our family. I am so sorry this has happened to you & your family, you are in my thoughts and prayers, God Bless
