Helen Margaret Finney
Sydney Mines

It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Helen Margaret Finney, age 87, on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by her loving family.
Ma was born on December 26, 1932, in Bras d’Or. She was the daughter of the late Ellen Regis and Clifton Jessome.
She was a stay at home Mom for many years, and then entered the workforce at National Sea, where she worked until her retirement.
Ma’s greatest joys were being surrounded by her family, and family gatherings. Other passions of hers included dancing, bowling, and playing cards. She was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8 Ladies Auxiliary.
Ma is survived by daughters Rodgerena Finney, Sydney Mines, and Diana (Kenny Steele), North Sydney, sons Clifton, St. John’s, Nl, David (Elsie), New Glasgow, Richard (Karen), Bras d’Or, Dennis (Wendy), George’s River, Danny (Della), Corner Brook, Nl, Creston (Monique), Halifax, and Leon (Vivian), Bras d’Or, 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild Ella, and a new great-grandchild expected in 2020. Also left to mourn are her sister Eunice Hyde, Florence, brothers Dennis (Beanie) Jessome, and Lenny (Carol) Jessome, Ontario, sisters-in-law Lillian Finney and Connie Jessome, brother-in-law Harold Millington, along with many nieces and nephews. Ma also leaves behind many cherished friends whom she thought of as family.
Besides her parents, Ma was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years, Dave, her sisters Theresa, Audrey and Yvonne, and her brother Jimmy.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Northside Guest Home and Dr. Michel McKeough for their care and kindness.
Visitation for Helen Finney will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A celebration of her life will take place on Thursday, at 11 am in Carman United Church, Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the Cancer Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, or a charity of your choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com

My condolences to Helen's family. I had the great pleasure of being introduced to Helen when I visited my sister, Helen Bragg, Dalem Lake, N.S. I live in Ontario. A few years back my sister Helen and I picked up Helen Finney to go to curves and coffee afterwards while I was visiting. I was invited into her home many times. SHE WAS ONE SPECIAL PERSON. SHE HAD ONE OF THE BIGGEST HEARTS. Just before my granddaughter Isabel was born, Helen knew I was returning to Ontario to be back for my daughter giving birth, Helen never met my daughter, but she ensured I had a present for my daughter's child. She had a wonderful sense of humor and had a special way of talking to everyone in her path. I will cherish her memory for the rest of my life - SHE IS IN NOTED IN MY HEART AS ONE OF THE MOST SPECIAL PERSONS I HAVE EVER MET. I AM SURE GOD WAS WAITING FOR HER AT THE GATE AND WELCOMED HER WITH OPEN ARMS. GOD BLESS YOU HELEN AND YOUR FAMILY. LOVE DONNA

Helen will be missed by a lot of Family and Friends in Cape Breton. Every time I visit home from Montreal I would see her at the Legion and she was always up dancing. The last time I was home we went to a dance and she grabbed me up for a dance and said I remember you Ponsie isn't it and of course I gave her a big hug. That was the last time I saw her so I will treasure that moment. RIP sweet lady.

I'm not much for wakes or funerals since losing Kelsey so forgive me old friend if you don't see me at either. I hope you view this message because it is the only way i can express my sorrow at the loss of your Mother. I can see in your Facebook posts that your love for your family is absolute and the closeness you have with them is something i envy. To loose parents is heartbreaking and i know for you it must be extremely tough for you my friend because of your total love for both of them, You may have some peace though knowing that they are together again and they will be watching over you and your wonderful family forever. So please accept my family's sincerest condolences at her passing and i hope your grief does not get the best of you like the hold it has on me!
