Alma Fletcher (Nugent) Ashe
January 15, 1925 – March 22, 2020
Sydney Mines

Mom departed this world the same way she lived her life, on her terms. Mom was loved and cherished by her family to the end. She was held in the loving arms of her niece Eleanor Blackwood as she passed to be with her loved ones who had gone before.
Mom was never without a story on her lips. She cherished every memory she made in her long life.
Anyone who knew Mom knew her passion was to shop, and to find a bargain, of course.
Her love of buying socks, which has all of us stocked up for many years to come, was known
throughout our family and beyond. Alma also loved to travel, with over 80 trips to “the Boston states”, even once by cab and many trips to Florida with family.
Alma was a career woman. She started her first job at age 11 filling grocery orders for the Khattar family store in Sydney Mines, who she remained lifelong friends with. Her next job was one she loved and spoke of often, with many laughs. She was employed by the Coal Company’s General office in the payroll department. Mom made many lifelong friends during her years there, leaving only to raise her first born, Russell K (Annie). We aren’t sure Mom was ever meant to be a stay at home mom, but she remained in that role until her daughter Alma (Darrell) went to school. Mom returned to her calling at the NSVDSB as payroll clerk for the remainder of her career. Mom would not have any more children the conventional way, but she would become Mom to 2 more boys Edwin Seward (Hughena) and Stanley “Roddie” Seward. Mom was very fulfilled in her role as a foster mom and given her choice she and Dad would have happily adopted them both.
Mom had many blessings in her life, wonderful friends and family. She had a loving relationship
with her siblings (if they were towing the mark). She and her sister Eleanor “Lovey” shared a
love of shopping. Mom was tenderly cared for by her sister Wendy and her family whenever she
was home on Cottage St. She had wonderful neighbours whom she spoke so highly of,
especially May Penney who spent many an evening watching Jeopardy and the Wheel with
Mom. Thank you May for your love, kindness and devotion to Mom, she loved you and it will not
be forgotten. When at home, Wendy and her children were very kind and caring to Mom. Joanne, Tommy John (Marion) and Elizabeth, Mom loved you all and we thank you for all you’ve done.
In Sackville, Mom was totally loved by her family and new found friends. Russ and I were unable to be with Mom at the end, but our 2 cousins stepped in. Eleanor and Terrilyn, there are no words to express what you meant to Mom and our family. You have been there to care for her, love her and laugh with her. She loved you both so much but we’re sure you know that already. So many people held a very special place in Mom’s heart, even though you may not be mentioned, know that we and Mom will never forget.
To her wonderful grandchildren, Darrell (Raeann), Kurt (Brittany), Lauren (James), Amoreena (Dylan) and Marsden (Emily), you were the apple of her eye. She was so proud of all your accomplishments and what wonderful human beings you became and all the time she got to spend with you. Her great grandchildren were blessings to her. Bryn, Shay and Lachlan were loved and cherished by “Alma”.Mom was predeceased by her husband Russell, her parents Eleanor and Mike Nugent, her
siblings Edward, Eleanor, Michael, Robert, Allister, LeRoy, John, Nancy and many sisters and
brother’s in law as well as her dear friends Agnes MacInnes and Wardia Hajjar.
She is survived by her children, their partners, grandchildren and great grandchildren mentioned above and her own youngest sibling, Wendy. Many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in law and friends, too many to mention.
Mom will live on in us through her stories, love and kindness to all. Mom's strength will endure through all of us. We will miss you Mom but know you have found peace with Dad and those who love you in Heaven.
I wish to give the most heartfelt thanks to my sister, Alma whose love, kindness and pure heartbreaking hard work in this hardest of times is beyond praise. God bless you. – Russ
As per Mom’s wishes there will be no wake or service. Donations to the Haley Street Adult Services Centre or any other worthwhile cause would light that wonderful smile one more time.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at

Whoever coined the term Multi Tasking must have followed Alma around for just one day of her busy, meaningful life. Career Woman. Mother. Grandmother and Great Grandmother. A solid friend to so many. A repository of family history. A woman who had a story to share about the characters of Sydney Mines. And of course, a pot of perfectly steeped tea ready to share and if you were lucky a little something from The British Canadian Cooperative Scoiety Bakery to go along with it. Dutch Round cake was a favourite of Alma s. Despite a busy home and work life, Alma couldn't say no. She volunteered for so many community causes. The St. Johns Ambulance, Fire Dept. Ladies Auxililiiary and the sale of Mass Cards right out of her own mention a few. Alma was alaways so kind to me but never hesitated to remind Russie and I that she was indeed the boss around here and planned to be for some time. Well..for 95 spectacular years she was the boss and I for one am the better for her guidance. To Russ and Alma and your families Joanne and I extend our heartfelt condolences and salute a life well lived. Rest in Peace, Alma.

Alma, Russie & saddened to hear of aunt Alma’s passing but celebrating the amazing full life she lived! She was indeed very fortunate to have
so much love and support from her family. I remember the visits to see Dad when he was sick..Alma & Peeps.🙂..we enjoyed the time spent together as well as the special treat she would bring for Dad. I remember as a child the time spent in Alma’s welcoming home..especially the front porch. We would travel down the well worn path from Ma & Da Nugents old family home for frequent visits. And yes..I remember her kindness to her extended family..please know that you are in our thoughts at this very difficult time..hoping you will take some comfort from the many happy memories..they are her final gift to you..hold them tight❤️ Valerie Marie and Family
