Velvet (Swan) Cousins
North Sydney
With her loving family by her side, Velvet (Swan) Cousins passed away peacefully on February 22nd, 2021 following a sudden and brief illness.
Velvet, the youngest of Mary (Roberts) and Stephen Swan’s five children, grew up on Park Road in Bras d’Or. At age 14, she met the love of her life, Wayne Cousins (deceased). Together they raised their three boys, Breton, Mackenzie (Mandy), and Carter. Their family enjoyed long Sunday afternoon drives around the Bras d’Or Lakes, summer trips to Inverness Beach, and the occasional game of Yahtzee.
Velvet was proud to be a breast cancer survivor. She devoted much of her time to supporting her fellow survivors and raising funds to find a cure. She was an active member of the Cape Breastoners Dragon Boat Team.
For 25 years, Velvet managed various Robin’s Donuts stores across Cape Breton. She loved getting up every morning to serve her loyal customers a cup of hot coffee with a big smile on the side. In recent years she filled her empty nest with her three cats, Molly, Maggie, and Tippy, whom she loved dearly.
In July, Velvet became a grandmother to Mackenzie and Mandy’s precious Rosalee. She cherished every moment they had together.
In addition to her three children and granddaughter, Velvet is survived by her brother Lawrence and three sisters, Marilyn (Fred), Nancy, and Diane (Billy); her 7 nephews and 4 nieces, several great nephews and great nieces, and many cousins.
Along with her parents and her beloved husband Wayne, Velvet was predeceased by her stillborn daughter, Cassandra, as well as her parents-in-law Adeline and Jim Cousins.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 26, 2021, at 11 am in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or. Due to Covid restrictions, seating in the church is limited. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com

We met Velvet at Robin’s in Sydney River, she always had a smile and she became the best part of our work day mornings. We shared many a laugh together in the morning. No matter how busy she was, she always had time for a smile and a laugh. When we first went to Robin’s she gifted us with painted lady bugs, which remain on my desk to this day. The world will be so much less without her in it. She will be remembered fondly by all that had the pleasure to know her. Our deepest sympathies to her family and friends. Rest In Peace sweet friend.

I had the opportunity to work with Wayne and Velvet early on at the Mister Donuts in Halifax. They both were trusted and appreciated and worked and lived with great passion. I was at their wedding and knew their oldest boy as an infant. Wayne and Velvet made a lasting impression that I cherish to this day. Velvet spoke to me in December about her boys and her grandchild, she couldn’t have been prouder. Her family will be her legacy. She will be missed and remembered. My condolences to her family for their loss.

My sincere condolences to Velvet's family, friends and co-workers. I knew Velvet as a valued team mate on the Cape Breastoners Dragon Boat Team. She was a fierce competitor and always gave everything she had to help our team succeed. She was so kind, she would help anyone at anytime. She lit up a room when she entered and was always fun to be around! She was such a presence, she will be missed terribly! Paddles up, Velvet, and take it away!

My heart is broken, Velvet and I had just found our common (Roberts) roots, our looks and Breast Cancer Survivorship. She was a hero to me raising money for Breast Cancer with her Dragon Boat Races. We had planned to meet up when this whole Covid19 was over. Now we will have to wait for Heaven. To her family, my deepest condolences.

I'm so sad to hear of Velvet's passing. She definitely was someone who had a personality that will not be forgotten. I met her through the Breast Cancer Survivor's retreat. I remember when I went to my first retreat, I knew no one, and was an emotional mess. She came right up and gave me a big hug and made me feel at home right away. Good rest Velvet.

I am so saddened to hear about Velvet's passing. A number of years ago I worked at Robins Donuts in Sydney. Velvet was a great boss. She was proud of her work and did it well. She was fun loving and so hard working. Our store was spotless because she made sure it was kept that way. I often think of her and all the other staff I worked with there. I left Robins to take another job, and didn't like where I went. I actually walked out of the workplace and quit on the spot. It was immediately after that getting in the car that I realized, I can't just quit. My husband and I had two small kids...so i went to the Robins drive through to get a coffee and she was there. I told her what happened and she said "You wanna come back honey?" I said "yes please!" She said drop up in the morning and we'll have your uniform waiting for you" That's who she was. I will fondly remember her and I am sure her family and friends have wonderful memories of her larger than life personality. My deepest sympathy.
