Annie Mae MacKinnon
Sydney Mines

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, Annie Mae MacKinnon, age 103, who passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at the MacGillivray Guest Home, 2nd Floor, CND Unit, Sydney, with her loving daughter Shirley at her side.
Born in Florence on May 25, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (MacPherson) MacIntosh. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Annie Mae was an active member of Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines. She spent a number of years as Sacristan there. She was a long-standing member of the C.W.L. she loved to bake and cook (no one left her place hungry), and play cards, but her greatest joy in life was with her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter Shirley, Bowmanville, ON, granddaughter Joanne (Kevin Hayes), Whitby, ON, her grandsons John (Sheri), Whitby, ON, Alexander, Kitchener, ON, Charles (Cassandra), Calgary, AB, and Aaron (Krista), Fort Saskatchewan, AB. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; Brandon, Connor, Haley, Lindsey, Tristan, Madden and Mairead; her daughter-in-law Elva, and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Lori MacIntosh (Lisa), Vancouver, BC.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Joseph (Joe the Duke) (1986), son Joseph (2002), daughter Sister Lorraine, CND (2009), and by her seven brothers; John, James, Lauchie, Allan, Hughie, William and Rod.
At this time, we would like to thank the nurses and staff of the 2nd Floor CND Unit, MacGillivray Guest Home for the love, care, and compassion shown to her in the three years she was a guest there. You treated her like you would your own mother, and we can’t thank you enough.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at a later date. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines, or to the MacGillivray Guest Home. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com

Shirley and family,
We were so sorry to hear of your mom's passing, she was indeed a very special lady and we have many happy memories of when she would accompany our mom for her weekly hair appointment, they were the best of friends, and when we would visit her at home on Sunday evening, before her card game of course, she will be greatly missed. May you find comfort in the many happy memories you hold dear. Rest in peace Annie Mae.

Shirley , Elva and all of Annie Mae's loved ones , I have so many fond memories of Annie Mae from years working for the Parish. I never had the chance to meet either one of my grandmothers and I in some ways I thought of her as my "Adopted Nanny" , although I wouldn't have dared to tell her that for fear of a clout upside the head lol. She spent her life devoted to what I'd like to call the three F's , Family , Faith and Friends and she is now reunited with God and so many of her family and friends. I can see her up in Heaven now boiling the water for tea reciting one of her favorite sayings that she told me a number of times. She would say "There should be more women in The House of Parliament , because there wouldn't be a man idle!"

It took a while for me to get on here, but we appreciate all the words and thoughts more than anybody would ever know. For me/my brother, she was always there for us. Jumping out of apples trees onto her roof, using her step as a hockey net or her picture window as a perfect back stop for baseball and filling my grandfathers car with "GAS" when I was 4, yeap it was actually water from the hose. I was blessed with the amount of memories I carry from all of my family members and when I get to come home, I'll tell them all to you. God Bless.
