Although we did not see him a lot, cousin Johnny was writ large in our lives.   For me, he was a poet, orator, storyteller and historian who was always curious and interested in other's lives.  The last time I saw him was at his mother's table in her new home.  We ate,  drank, got political and laughed a lot, his booming laugh filling the room and our hearts.  I was fortunate to talk with him a few months ago and he spoke proudly of Kate and his daughters.  Rest in peace and power Johnny. Your contributions to family and community will resonate for generations to come.

I was saddened to learn of Johnny's passing. He was an inspiring teacher who never forgot his Sydney Mines roots.  I remember dissecting frogs and peering through microscopes in Biology labs. He helped to make learning enjoyable and memorable.  My condolences to the entire family.

Dear Kate, Susie and Kerry-Lynn,  I am so sorry to read of Johnny's passing.  He had a personality larger than life and was very proud of his family. So many memories at Brady's Beach and at Mom and Dad's house over the years. He always loved to torment me about how much I loved to talk.  May God grant you the strength to get through this very difficult time, knowing he is at peace and no longer suffering bring you some comfort, RIP Johnny, you will be missed my friend.

Kate, Suzie, Kerry Lynn et al,
I've looked at myself as a writer for decades and was honored to be told I was a good one by Johnny. I cannot however, seem to conjure up the words...not sure they've EVER been written...to explain how awesome Johnny was.
His sense of humor spread joy like peanut butter and his patience with myself, and I'm sure many others, who refused to dissect the frog in Biology class was well appreciated.
As superintendent Johnny saved my professional life 12 years in when I wanted to leave because I was emotionally rutted Just 2 days before school opened in 1986 he allowed me to enter a combined "grades" primary and one classroom in Gannon Road School for the first time... with no experience... and trade off my physical Education career to Mary Lou Mac Pherson who had just received a classroom job and preferred P.E..he trusted and complimented us. The rest is history and one of the best parts of my life.
I wrote the retirement speech for Johnny and wish I had a copy of it now.he hooted in a few spots...so...what I WILL DO is smile every time I think of him and my empathy for you now runs one deep. Bless your hearts!

Dear Kate and Family,
I felt so badly about Mr.Currie's passing. I couldn't call him John even when I became a teacher and a union colleague. I respected him that much. He was one of the few teachers in high school that I never skipped a class for. That may sound weird, but that is how interesting he made biology! RIP Currie! And I hope that God doesn't send you out to Patsy's bog to get round worms. If he were alive ,he'd know what I meant and laugh! Susan Mac Donald , Kathy Hannigan and I did this on faith. We still laugh about it!
Deepest sympathies,
Valerie(Mac Dougall) Patterson

Dear Kate Carney and Family:

Very sorry to here of “ Mr. Currie’s” Passing. He was one of my favorite teachers and certainly “ turned us on” to Biology which led lots of us to pursue degrees in Science. He was a wonderful teacher and we also appreciated his dry humor. We had great teachers at Sydney Mines High and they certainly knew how to control the classroom. We respected them and they respected us.
Take Care!

Please accept my sincere condolences. He was one of my favourite teachers and whether or not you wanted to learn you always did in his class. Class was a good word to describe Mr. Currie as we knew him. We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Time has a way of passing us by and I can't believe it's been almost 50 years since I sat in his class.

To Kate and the entire Currie family.
For me, Johnnie was an excellent educator and communicator who led by example. I was very fortunate to have him as a teacher and a cadet leader at  SMH. I retain many fond memories of him for the sincerity he demonstrated to all students of his genuine interest in our personal and professional development. A good man...rest in peace Johnnie.
