Alexander Hawley Obituary

Alexander James Hawley passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

Alex will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 51 years, Billie, his loving children, Arlene and Alex (and his favorite daughter-in-law Ashley). Alex is survived by his siblings Evelyn, Bobby (Alice), and Paul Victor, as well as many loved, although often teased, nieces and nephews, brother - and sisters-in-law. Alex and his dad, Paul, had great laughs, blaming Bobby for all of the trouble the two caused together. Full of laughter and love for family, he was christened Auggie by his nephew (or second son) Ian (Miranda) and Echo by his great-niece Jill, both of whom were a great comfort this past week.

Alex was predeceased by his father, Cecil; his mother, Nellie; his dad, Paul; his brother, Cecil; his brother-in-law, Joey, and his sister, Brenda, as well as his favorite aunt, Dodie and his mother-in-law Ina; his frequent partner-in-crime.

Born June 28, 1947, in North Sydney, he was a hard worker all of his life who started working at Marine Atlantic as a teenager and continued until his retirement. He was often found tinkering in his barn, even though, like his dad, he really did not know what he was doing. We laugh about the time he could not figure out why his circular saw was not working, only to have it pointed out that he had just cut through the cord. It was just one of the many things we were not supposed to tell Mom.

Well-known in the neighborhood for his frequent strolls, interrupted by the many stops to chat with his long-time neighbors, he was quick with a joke and a good-natured insult.

At Alex’s request, there will be no wake or funeral. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the charity of your choice.

A special thanks to all the doctors and nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, especially in the C.C.U., for all of their efforts, care, and kindness.

Alex will be forever remembered and loved by his family and friends.

I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. – 2 Timothy 4.7
