SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
We would like to welcome everyone to attend a Grave Side Service on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 10:00am at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or. A reception will follow in the Bras d’Or Hall.
With broken hearts, we regret to announce the passing of Alphonse Fraser of Alder Point, after a brief illness, on Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Hospice Cape Breton with his loving spouse and family by his side. He is the son of the late Russell and Teresa (Broderick) Fraser.
Al worked at the Alder Point Fish Plant as a young boy and later left home to join the Seafarers International Union, where he sailed the Great Lakes. He headed west and started working for the Labourers International Union Local 92 as a labourer and later numerous foreman positions. He took jobs in Local 1111, 180, 837 and 1611. He then travelled to Ontario for work on the Niagara Hydro Tunnel Project. The last number of years Al has been working with the Internal Union of Operating Engineers Local 955 and 115 where he worked on the pipeline as an operator, straw boss and foreman.
He is survived by his loving and devoted spouse Velda Nugent, sisters Mary (Stanley-deceased) Marsh, Alder Point, Robena (Jim-deceased) Strickland, Westmount, Jackie Fraser and Florence Fraser, both of Sydney Mines, brothers James, Sydney Mines, Floyd (Mary), Scotch Lake, Peter (Cindy), Keremeos, BC, Duke (Treva), Georges River, brother-in-law Nigel Holbeche, Sydney River, sisters-In-law JoAnn Putman, St. Catherines, ON, Eliza Rudderham, Sydney Mines, as well as an abundance of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Al was predeceased by sisters Theresa Holbeche, Lois (Winston) Leblanc, brothers Raymond, Paul, Russell Jr, and niece Amanda Fraser.
Al is also survived by mother-in-law Joan and (Billy-deceased) Nugent, Bras d’Or, Darlene (Carl) Swan, Bras d’Or, Bill Jr. (Patsy) Nugent, New Glasgow, Ave Maria (Vincent) Tobin, Sydney Mines and Alvin (Joan) Nugent, North Sydney.
Al’s happiest times were spent with his Dad on his fishing boat as a young boy and he cherished each and everyone of those memories and spoke of them often. As an adult he loved spending time on that same wharf cooking lobsters and sharing them to others, so they could also enjoy them as much as he did. Al was blessed with many good friends, whom he treasured dearly.
Al will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. D’intino and Lynette Sawchuk and the entire staff of Hospice Cape Breton for the outstanding care he received in his final journey home.
We would like to extend thanks to Dr. A. Giorno and 4E An Cala staff and Dr. Colin Bonnar and 4A staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
