Ann Buchanan Obituary

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Ann Marie Buchanan, age 75, on November 7, 2025. Ann passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her family. Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Freeman and Annie (Witherall) Hatcher.

From a young age, Ann carried a gentle spirit and a quiet kindness that drew people to her. It was in her own neighbourhood that she first caught the eye of John Buchanan, the love of her life. It took John a full year to gather the courage to ask her out, and together they went on to enjoy eight beautiful years of dating—filled with simple moments, shared laughter, long walks, and growing side by side. In time, John asked her father for her hand in marriage, and the two were married in the summer of 1972, beginning a journey built on devotion, respect, and deep, unwavering love. Their bond was a true partnership in every sense of the word.

Ann’s passion for teaching led her to a long career as an elementary school teacher in North Sydney. A patient and encouraging educator, she believed in seeing the best in every child. She nurtured curiosity, celebrated small accomplishments, and offered warmth where it was needed most. Ann retired in 1999, but the impact of her gentle guidance and genuine care lives on in the many students whose lives she touched.

Outside the classroom, Ann found joy in creativity and simple pleasures. She loved crafting and attending local craft shows, always searching for something handmade to admire or share. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, and welcoming visitors into her home. No one ever left Ann’s kitchen without a warm conversation and a taste of her home-baked treats. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and a softness of heart that made everyone feel cared for.

Ann is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, John; her children, Jeffrey Buchanan and his wife Kirsten of Big Beach, NS and Trina Buchanan of Sydney, NS; and her cherished grandchildren, Brittany, Faith, and Julianna, who were her greatest joy. She is also survived by her sisters Elsie (Ken) and Helen (Don), her brother John (Nadine), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

In keeping with Ann’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ann’s memory to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre.

Ann will forever be remembered for her kindness, her warm heart, and the love she shared so generously. Her legacy lives on in her family, her students, and all who were blessed to know her.
