Barry MacIntyre Obituary

Barry MacIntyre

Sydney Mines

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Barry MacIntyre on Monday, January 16, 2023, with his family by his side at the An Cala Unit CBRH, after a short, courageous battle with colon cancer.

Born at home on Church St., Sydney Mines on July 13, 1949, Barry was the son of the late John and Rosina (Reilly) MacIntyre.

Dad and Mom were married for 46 years until her passing in April 2017. They loved to entertain; our house was known as the due drop inn. Anyone who knew our Dad knew how much he loved Friday Jam Nights, GG, Crusan, listening to music, playing the spoons, cooking his famous campfire fries and weiners, and of course his BOING BOINGS. Dad had so many special friendships with his family and friends it is so hard to just mention a few. You all know how much he loved every special connection he had with each of you. His greatest joy was Jillian. He absolutely adored her. She is a lot like him. They share a special bond, going for drives. Dad would talk about the history of Sydney Mines and Alder Point. He even taught her that the fire is out if the smoke is white. Dad had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back. Dad worked at Cape Breton Island Housing for 44 years. He was a member of the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club, and he took great pride in being a member of the Sydney Mines Fire Department for 26 years. Firefighting was in his blood, even after he retired.

Barry is survived by his daughters Leann, and Kerri (Derek) Scott, and the light of his life, his granddaughter Jillian. He also leaves behind his brother Johnny (Sylvia), companion Sue Publicover, sisters-in-law Florence McNeil, Marjorie O’Toole, Shirley (Clyde) MacQuarrie, Ann Musgrave, Noreen (Stewie) Penny, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years, Lenore, in-laws Raymond and Ella (Bonar) O’Toole, brothers Brian, and Joe (Maureen), sisters Mary (Russell) MacDonald, and Lorraine (Tommy) Woodfine, brothers-in-law Francie O’Toole, Aussie O’Toole, Bobby O’Toole, Fr. Ray O’Toole, and Earl McNeil, sisters-in-law Gloria MacIntyre, Deane (Allison) Power, and several nieces and nephews.
