We are saddened to announce the passing of our dear Mom, Bernette Bowne, on August 7, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Mom was born to Annie Mae and Bernard Bowne on January 2, 1941, in Sydney Mines.
Mom was very active in the community as a choir member of Immaculate Conception Parish, a volunteer with Special Olympics and was very helpful to the many staff and students at Jubilee Elementary School, while also being involved in School Advisory Committee. Mom loved to skate, sew, and spend time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren.
Mom worked at the former St. Elizabeth Hospital as a Nursing Assistant until the birth of her children, when she became a full-time Mom. As the family grew, Mom returned to work as a Teacher’s Assistant with the intellectually challenged students in the elementary schools in Sydney Mines. She later worked in the field of Residential Care for several years, finishing out her career at Haley Street Center.
Mom is survived by her children Kenny (Judy), Nancy, Shawn (Tanya), Darren, and Kerry Lynn (Scott). Her pride and joy were her grandchildren Brittany, Leanne (Jordan), Jordan, Jamie (Brian), Logan, Karley, and Darcey, as well as great-grandchildren Nash and Weston. She is also survived by her siblings Jim (Carolyn), Judy, Brenda, Paul (Mary Louise), Charlie, Bernie (Vickie), and Karen. Mom had very special friends, including Judy Whalen and Georgina Buffett.
Mom kept her wishes simple, so there will be no wake or church service. There will be a private family burial at a later date.
The family would like to thank the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, her Family Doctor Michele McKeough, and Judy Whalen.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Haley Street Center or a charity of your choice.
