Brent “Benny“ John Martin Cantwell
1947-2024
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Husband, Father, Grand Father, Brother, Brother-in-law, and Uncle, Brent, surrounded by his ever-loving family on January 8, 2024, at the DVA at Harbourview Hospital after a very courageous battle with Dementia.
Born in Bras d’Or on November 11, 1947, Brent was the son of the late Percy and Florence Cantwell. Brent was a very hard-working man. He had a smile for everyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was employed with the Cape Breton Island housing for 17 years before he retired. He loved his job and each and every person he met and got to see on a daily basis! He would always have a story for you and leave you with a smile on your face!
Brent is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Joan. Daughter Jeannie (Joey) of North Sydney, Son Michael (Celine) of Aldershot, NS, and his 7 grandchildren, Brody, Jaxon, Brooke, Michael, Robert, Zealand, and Carter, who all loved their poppy Brent so much. Also left to mourn this great loss are Brent’s siblings. Brothers: Earl (Sylvia), Basil (Susie), Andre (Joan), Blaise (Laurie). Also, his sisters Theresa (Doug Verge), Paula (David Jessome), Linda (Kevin Reashore), Heather (Terry Ahle), Simone (Donald Clark), Sharon Boutilier, and Phyllis Rideout. As well as his in-laws, Michael (Tina) King, John (Ann) King, Patrick (Donna) King, Bernadette (Eric) Forrest, Emily (Bill) Todd, Kim (David) Carew and Sharon Moodie. Along with many Nieces and Nephews.
Besides his parents, Brent was pre-deceased by his brothers: Blaise and Russell, Sister-in-law Jeannie, and mother and father-in-law Michael and Theresa, King (Gouthro) of Florence.
We, the family, would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff in the DVA for taking such wonderful care of Brent for the last few years, making sure he was comfortable and well looked after. Also, we would like to extend a thank you to Dr Andrew Wawer for always taking great care of Brent and doing everything possible for him.
In keeping Brent’s wishes in mind, Cremation has taken place. At Brent’s request, there will be no visitation. There will be a funeral mass on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 10:30 am at St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with Father Fabian officiating. A reception will follow in the Bras d’Or Hall. Donations in Brent’s memory can be made to a charity of your choice!
