We are heartbroken to announce that Charles (Charlie) Walter Blackie, 77, of Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully on Feb 4th, 2026 at home.
Charlie married Theresa Fudge on December 22, 1975, celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary this past December. They went on to build a home together and had 2 girls, spending their entire lives in Sydney Mines.
Dad was known as the meat cutter from George Street (along with his best friend Wilsie Gardiner), with hunters lining the street each October when hunting season opened. Soon after, the snow came and the phone would ring endlessly for dad to come plow someone out. He would be gone around the clock in the famous black Dodge RAM until everyone managed to get back on the road.
Dad kept busy his whole life – managing Nickerson’s fish plant in North Sydney, opening a fish market, owning a corner store, surveying with Astphen Surveys, working with the Department of Fisheries, and ending his working career with The Commissionaires. If there was a way for him to work and make money or even if someone just needed a hand, he would be there. He also was the unofficial neighbourhood carpenter, having built his own home and his daughters, along with many decks and garages around the neighbourhood. He was always in the barn tinkering with something, he could never sit still.
He loved the outdoors. In his active days he could be found with a fishing rod in hand, or in the woods hunting. Him and Wilsie spent lots of time on the Margaree, and would still talk about those trips long after they ended. He loved hanging out at the Wharf in North Sydney, visiting all his friends and the fishing crews, lobster season being his favorite. He looked forward to it everyday. Fish, oceans and lakes were always in his life one way or another and his love of seafood reminded us of that quite often.
Charlie is survived by his wife Theresa, his daughters Charlene (Keith Youden), Samantha (Chris Lawrence) and the light of his life, his granddaughter Clara. He is also survived by his brother Dave Blackie, 3 Step Grandchildren (Olivia, Talya and Jesse Youden) and many brother and sister in-laws as well as nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Willena (Lynk) Blackie, his brother James Blackie as well as brother and sister in laws and aunts and uncles. Wilison Garnier will also be waiting for dad. We can’t forget dad’s best bud Lexxi who will be waiting for her next drive in his truck.
We would sincerely like to thank Dr Andrew Wawer for helping as much as he could in dad’s last years to make sure he could stay at home. To the staff of the Northside Homemakers and VON - the daily visits really made his day, especially from his favorite girls, he thought the world of all of you. You made all our lives better and we can’t thank you enough. A special thanks to dad’s respite care Chi MacIntyre, who helped take care of him – your patience, care and compassion won’t be forgotten, and although he didn’t show it everyday, he loved hearing your stories about his buddies and would repeat them as soon as you were out the door. So many people were so kind, it would be impossible to name you all, but we will remember each of you.
As per dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place. He will be laid to rest at Holy Parish Cemetery at a later date with a family gathering to follow.
The last couple of years of dad’s life wasn’t easy for him and he is finally at peace. We hope he is enjoying some time on the Margaree with Wilisie and catching some giant fish to cook. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, but we know he will still be watching over us all one way or another. He will never be far.
Dad always said “Beam me up Scottie” – he finally did. Until we meet again dad, may you rest in peace.
