It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charlie MacDonald (49), who passed suddenly from an undiagnosed heart condition on Friday, March 13, 2026.
Born on May 15, 1976, to the late Clifford MacDonald and Phyllis Johnston in Sydney Mines.
Charlie was like a dog at a party; everyone wanted to be around him. He will be remembered for his humour, kindness, and love for others.
Charlie’s greatest achievements in life were his children and his fur-baby, Paul. Charlie was a great man who was easy to love. Many people may not have known what to expect when they first met him, but often they left with a new friend they could count on for life. Charlie did not have much in the way of material things, but he would gladly give the shirt off his back, offer a cup of coffee, and share the love of Jesus with anyone who needed it.
Charlie fought many battles and struggled with drug addiction. He often warned people about the impact of drug addiction and never wanted anyone to experience what he had been through. In the end, Charlie’s life was not defined by his struggles, but by his heart. He loved deeply, tried hard, and cared about others more than he ever cared about himself.
If his story teaches anything, it is to love people where they are at, share kindness, and never forget that every life matters, no matter how difficult the path.
He leaves behind his beloved children, Matthew (Courtney), Ryan, and Emma (Travis). Charlie was a proud grandfather to Braxton and Veronica, who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his uncle Ricky, whom he loved like a brother; his cousins, Fran, Jordan, Jenna, and Nancy; and his lifelong best friends, Duane (Duey) Evans and Alex Snow. He also leaves behind “the best ex-wife ever,” Candace. Besides his parents, he is also predeceased by his uncles Mickey, Billy, Tony, and Hector, and his aunts Jacqueline and Chrissy.
Charlie often reminded people how much Jesus loved them and encouraged others to make Jesus their Lord and Saviour. He believed that if Jesus could love him, then He surely loves you too.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 1–2 p.m. at JM Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines, with a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
In memory of Charlie, you may make a donation to the Ally Centre of Cape Breton or tell a stranger that Jesus loves them.
ROMANS 7:15–20
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know
