It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Colleen Johnston, age 63, on Sunday, August 1st, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family by her side.

Born in Sydney Mines on April 23, 1958, Colleen was the daughter of the late Colin and Lorraine Fortune. Colleen was a hard-working woman who went to work at a young age at the Fish Plant, where she worked for 30 years and most recently Superstore in North Sydney where she has been working for the past 13 years. Colleen had the biggest heart you can ever imagine and she always knew how to make everybody laugh or smile.

Colleen is survived by the love of her life and devoted husband of 44 years, Jackie. children, John (Ashley) Johnston and Marsha Johnston (Sandy). She is also survived by siblings Adeline (Carl), Ada (Lyndon), Deborah (Michael), Danny, Colin (Brenda), John Thomas, Kenny and Frankie, brother and sisters-in law : David (Thelma), Kenny (Merilda), Freddy, Beverly and Mabel, grandchildren: Brittany (Matthew), Nathan (Marley), Colin (Vanessa), Jaelyn, Ava, Evan and Brooklyn, great-grandchildren: Myla, Lukas, Jaxson, Layla and Sophie, many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family, and her special friends: Marcella MacRae, Mary Pearo, Moira Hines and Mary Jessome.

Besides her parents, Colleen was predeceased by her parents-in-law, Edward and Germaine Johnston, her sister-in-law Louise Young as well as her beloved sister Linda MacDonald.

A special thank you to Dr. Andrew Wawer, doctors and nurses from the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, as well as the staff of the ICU at the VG hospital for making sure Colleen was comfortable on her final journey home.

At Colleens request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at 10 am in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Fabian Ihunegbo officiating. Covid 19 restrictions will apply in the church. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
