Daniel MacKinnon Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Leo Joseph “Joe” MacKinnon on August 26, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born on June 13, 1949, in Sydney Mines to the late John Francis (Fah) and Margaret (Stewart) MacKinnon, Joe lived a life filled with deep love for family, unwavering friendships, and a commitment to his community.

Joe loved his family fiercely and unconditionally. He held the titles of Dad and Poppy with great joy and pride. He is survived by his beloved son Daniel (Tiffany) MacKinnon, and his cherished granddaughter Aislynn MacKinnon—affectionately known as “Dupers” by her Poppy—along with his favourite grand-dog, Molly, all of Dominion. He is also remembered by Daniel’s mother, Christine (Hearn) MacKinnon of Sydney.

Joe’s life was enriched by his dearest friend Gordon (Irene) Selfridge of Sydney Mines, and his special friend and companion, Valerie LeBlanc of Coxheath.

He is survived by his brother Francis (Mary) MacKinnon of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, sister Margaret Ann MacKinnon of Bras d'Or, and sister-in-law Ann MacKinnon of Burton, New Brunswick. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews—Billy, Trisha (Sean), Erin (Fernando), Rob (Tasha), Jeff (Jody)—whom he loved deeply and was immensely proud of.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, brothers Robert (Bobby) and James (Jimmy), and his sister Sr. Arlene MacKinnon and Sisters in law, Glady MacKinnon and Kay MacKinnon.

For 35 years, Joe worked at Shoppers Drug Mart, forming lasting relationships that transcended the workplace. Colleagues became family, and he found great joy in the social connections with customers, staff, and wholesalers alike. He loved his job so much that his family often joked they weren’t sure he’d ever retire.

Joe also cherished his Monday night hockey crew, holding his own between the pipes as goalie, always up for the challenge.

Joe was also well known among the Rotary community, serving with New Waterford Rotary. He could also be seen every Christmas season on kettle duty for the Salvation Army.

He was known for his long history of “fixer-upper” vehicles, each with its own story. After Daniel retired from the military, Joe eagerly joined him in the Cape Breton car club scene, proudly purchasing a Jaguar and looking forward each year to “car show season.” Whether Daniel was driving a Mustang or his briefly-owned Jaguar, Joe was simply happy to be by his son’s side, sharing the joy of the road.

A devoted grandfather, Joe was Aislynn’s loudest cheerleader—whether at swim meets, even traveling to PEI, or celebrating her day-to-day accomplishments. And in true grandparent fashion, he never missed a chance to secretly slip her a few dollars when her parents weren’t looking.

Joe treasured any opportunity to bring family together, no matter the occasion—always accompanied by a good glass of rye and plenty of MacKinnon-style banter.

Joe’s kindness, wit, and generosity touched everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever celebrated.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of 4A, ICU, and the Palliative Care An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their compassionate care during Joe’s illness. A special thank you is extended to RN Micayla Buis for her kindness and support. The family also wishes to acknowledge Jeannette Beaton Saccary, who was always there for Joe—whether tending to a dressing or showing up with a fresh turkey sandwich, her thoughtfulness will never be forgotten.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, Aug 28th, 2025, from 5-8 pm at JM Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Aug 29th, 2025, at 11 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, North Sydney, officiated by Father Doug MacDonald.

In lieu of flowers, Joe’s wishes were for donations to be made to the Cape Breton Hospital Palliative Care Unit, the Cape Breton Chapter of Children’s Make-A-Wish Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
