Darlene Marie Steffens, age 64, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, after a short but mighty battle with lung cancer.
She was born on April 30, 1961, in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, to the late Herb (Buddy) Steffens and Annie Mae (LeBlanc).
She will be missed dearly by her long-time partner, Johnnie Julian, whom she was often heard calling “honey” when she needed a helping hand. She leaves behind her daughter, Cheryl (Sandy) MacAulay, in Fort McMurray, Alberta, as well as her son, Andrew MacKinnon (Keshia), in Sydney Mines. Darlene was most proud of being “Nanny” to Brianna and Kolten, making cherished memories while visiting them and travelling around Alberta during summer vacations.
Darlene is predeceased by her parents, Annie Mae (LeBlanc) and Herb Steffens; her sister, Susan MacNeil; brother, Steven Steffens; niece, Melissa MacNeil; and mother-in-law, Molly Julian. She is survived by her siblings, Judy MacLean (Donnie), Ken Steffens Sr. (Gerry), Vince Steffens, and Kathy Steffens; as well as David (Kathy) Julian, Moira (Howard) Hines, Mary Julian, Cathy Julian, and Michelle (Freddie) Moore; her best buddy, Ryan; and numerous nieces, nephews, and her grandchildren, Brianna and Kolten MacAulay (Fort McMurray).
Her family would like to thank her palliative care nurse, Julia, and her team for the special care she received at home, as well as the staff on the 5th floor of Northside General, who ensured she remained comfortable in her final days. A very special thank you goes to Shannon for her patience and tenderness with Darlene—your kindness brightened her days and brought peace of mind to the family through your amazing care.
As per Darlene’s final wishes, a Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, January 20th, at 6 p.m. at the Sydney Mines Seniors & Pensioners Club, 6 Fraser Ave, Sydney Mines, in lieu of visitation and mass services.
