Darrell’s life was filled with music, laughter, and a deep love for his family, friends, and the community of Ingonish. Known for his talent as a guitarist, his quick wit, and his generous heart, he touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Chico, his “soul dog,” shared in that joy, offering unwavering loyalty, comfort, and companionship. The bond between Darrell and Chico was unbreakable, and their passing so close together is a testament to the love they shared.
Please come and share stories, music, and memories as we honor the joy, kindness, and spirit that Darrell and Chico brought into the world.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Darrell MacDonald, who left us peacefully on January 14, 2025, at 8 p.m. at the, aged 67, Son of the late Clayton and Gladys (Hawley) MacDonald, Darrell was a beloved partner, stepfather, brother, and friend, whose lighthearted spirit touched everyone he met.
Darrell shared 19 beautiful years with his common-law partner, Cherie Mills. Though he had no children of his own, he embraced his stepchildren Amber, Brad, and Jacky and their families with love and kindness. He was a cherished step-grandfather to six grandchildren. Darrell is survived by his step-brother Eric MacDonald, siblings Renee and Sonia MacDonald, cousin Sheldon, and his dear friends Cecil, Philip, Joe, Nicholas, Eric (Whitty) and Susan, all of whom held him close in their hearts.
Born in Neil’s Harbour, Darrell spent his life in Ingonish, a place he loved and never wanted to leave. He was deeply rooted in the community, known for his talents as a musician and his sense of adventure. A part-time lobster poacher and a full-time guitarist, Darrell lived life on his own terms. He had a passion for writing music, playing the guitar, and singing his original songs including an ode to his grandfather, the infamous Ingonish rum-runner. Whether he was sharing a laugh with friends, cheering on his favorite hockey team, or telling a joke, Darrell brought warmth and joy to every moment.
Those who knew Darrell often described him as kind, accepting, loving, and selfless. He had a gift for finding humor in life’s challenges and made everyone around him feel welcome. His beloved dog, Taz, was the only female allowed in the man cave.
Darrell’s friends and family fondly remember him as an inspiration and a loyal companion. Cecil recalls how Darrell encouraged him to explore music and respect others. Sheldon, like a brother to Darrell, said, “There wasn’t a bad bone in his body.” Nicholas cherished Darrell’s lifelong friendship, knowing he could always rely on him. Philip reminisced about their many evenings laughing in the barn, while Cecil shared memories of their younger years, from jigging for eels to DJing dances and chasing adventures together.
Darrell’s love and generosity knew no bounds—if you needed a hand, he was always there with a smile and a joyful heart.
A celebration of Darrell’s life will take place this summer in Ingonish. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to the Cancer Society in Darrell’s memory.
