Derrick Spooney Obituary

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of Derrick Spooney, on March 3, 2025. After a courageous battle with cancer, he left this world peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family.
Though his time here was too short, he filled every moment with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
Derrick was a devoted husband to Shauna and a loving father to Phillip (Jess), Adam, and Jessica (Bretton). He was also a proud stepfather to Tasha, Marissa (Logan), and Ryan (Phoenix). His greatest joy was his family, and he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, Seth, Cohen, Auston, Easton, Mason, and Kayce, who brought endless happiness into his life.

Derrick is survived by his loving mother, Mary, who meant the absolute world to him. She was his rock, his greatest supporter, and the person who taught him the meaning of unconditional love. Their bond was unbreakable, and Derrick carried that love with him and everything he did. He is also survived by his brothers, Michael (Kelly), Johnny, Chris, Jeff (Verna), Steven (Terri), and only sister Anna (Paul), many nieces and nephews, as well as father-in-law Derrick (Bev), and sister-in-law Kim (Kevin).

He was a proud member of Local 1325 for 11 years, where he not only built a career but also formed life-long friendships with those he worked alongside. Derrick had a way of bringing people together, making work feel less like a job and more like family.

One of the greatest friendships of his life, was with his best friend, Kenny Bradley. For over 50 years, Derrick and Kenny shared an unbreakable bond, built on laughter, trust and countless memories. Through every chapter of life, they stood by each other - never once having an argument. A testament to the rare and special connection they shared.

Derrick was known for his quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and larger-than-life personality. He could make everyone laugh; even in the toughest moments, he never lost the ability to crack a joke. Right until the very end, he kept those around him smiling, proving that his spirit was just as strong as his heart. Derrick had an immense love for his family, and the gatherings with those he loved were at the heart of everything he did, whether it was birthdays, holidays, or just a random Sunday afternoon. It was in those moments that his true happiness shone. His warm presence, infectious laughter, and big heart made every gathering a celebration, and it's those memories that will continue to bring smiles and comfort to those who were lucky enough to share them with him.

One of his greatest joys was karaoke. Whether belting out a tune or encouraging others to take the mic, he made every gathering more fun. His voice, his energy, and his love for music will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of singing alongside him. Though he is no longer with us, Derrick's love, laughter, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He was preceded by his father, Michael, his mother-in-law, Darlene, and his beloved family members, Ryan, Charlotte, Derrick, and Joey.

Derrick's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the palliative care team, whose kindness and compassion brought comfort in his final days. A special thank you to Nurse Julia, Dr. Burns, and Dr. Abboud for their unwavering care, support, and dedication. Their kindness will never be forgotten.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 8th  from 1 to 3, with a funeral service to follow at 3 p.m., officiated by Rev Jackie Warren. All who knew him are welcome to attend.
