Donna Marinelli Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Donna Jane Marinelli, a beloved mother and grandmother who left us on May 14, 2025, at the age of 77 in Sydney, NS after a brave battle with cancer and a beautifully lived life.

A devoted wife and mother of three, born in Sydney Mines, Donna was known for her kind heart, and unwavering love for her family.  She was predeceased by her parents James and Adeline (McGean) Cousins, and brother Wayne Cousins (Velvet).  She leaves behind her husband Philip Marinelli, children; Tracy MacDonald (Dan), Karen Gillis (John), and Cheryl Nash (Fabian) along with her most treasured grandchildren; Sarah Walsh (Zak), Garrett MacDonald, Travis Gillis, Kaylee Gillis, and Lilah Nash.  Along with her brother Ernie Cousins (Marlene) St. Catherines, ON.

Donna was a dedicated housewife who took immense pride in keeping her house up and loved fresh laundry, ironing, and being the rock and centre of her family’s universe.  She kept us together while maintaining everyone’s privacy, she was always careful not to share “what was not hers to share”.  She was stubborn to a fault but full of love, laughter, and resilience, she touched the lives of all who knew her.  She was always there when we needed her the most, just a phone or video call away, offering support, wisdom, and love in abundance.

Most close to her knew her as just ‘Nanny’. The grandkids were everything and she loved them beyond anything else, she spent hours role playing, making playdoh sculptures, hairdresser, Barbies, watching and listening to their every word making memories that will last their lifetimes.

She was unique in so many ways and found pleasure in her appliances that never got used, shopping for the latest home gadgets and being at home just vegging in her comfy spot on the couch.  She was an accomplished crafter with a skill for ceramics, crocheting, tole painting and most recently quilting (watching the Friday night frenzy), always sharing her creations with those she loved most.  She would love to sit and admire how the final product turned out. She also loved listening to old time music loudly and dancing with that signature kick move.

By personal request, there will be no visitation or funeral service held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Cape Breton Hospital Foundation towards the Cape Breton Cancer Centre in Donna's memory.

Sending a huge thank you to all the healthcare providers who supported and helped Donna through her cancer journey, they became like a family to her.

We will forever cherish the memories of our beloved Nanny.
