Obituary

Doris Eleanor Taylor

It is with deep sorrow that we, the family of Eleanor (Jerrett) Taylor, announce her passing at the Northside Community Guest Home in North Sydney on Sunday, September 17th, 2023.

Born in Sydney Mines on July 23, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Delphine (Rateau) Jerrett.

Eleanor, along with her sister Josie, owned and operated Josie’s Restaurant in Balls Creek for many years, which, according to many, had the best hamburgers and homemade pies, which kept their patrons coming back time and time again.

Eleanor loved to travel.  For many years, she and Al hopped in their Airstream trailer and drove across Canada, the US, and Mexico.  Once their driving was done, they settled in Mesa, Arizona, in the winter and returned to Cape Breton for the summer months.  Eventually, they returned home to Cape Breton and resided in Westmount until after Al’s death.  Eleanor then returned to Sydney Mines to be close to friends and family.

Eleanor was very musical.   Singing was her passion.  When not singing at home, she was a member of several choirs and, in her early days, was a cast member in many musicals.  She took her passion until the end.  She lived a full and beautiful life, from family events to the many visits over the years from both friends and family, and she especially enjoyed her yearly Birthday parties.   For the past seven years, she has resided at the Guest home in Cara House.

She is survived by her chosen daughter Cathy (nee MacNeil) and son-in-law Robert Gray; two grandsons, Morgan (Carmen) Gray and Christian (Melissa MacPherson) Gray.   She was blessed with five great-grandchildren: Annabelle, Willa, Mason, Greer, and Madeleine.  She also leaves behind her loving sisters, Ruth Anne Williams (Charles) of Sydney Mines and Dora Murphy (Bill) of Millville.  She is survived by numerous special nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews whom she adored, and they adored her.

Besides her parents, Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Taylor, five brothers, and three sisters.

We would like to thank the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home for their excellent care and compassion for Eleanor and her family.

In keeping with Eleanor’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, from 4-6 p.m., in JM Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St. Sydney Mines.  A Funeral service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 11 a.m. in JM Jobes Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. Family flowers only, please. Donations in Eleanor’s memory may be made to the SPCA or a charity of one’s choice.
