Douglas Angus “Dougie” MacLeod, age 78, of Sydney, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, at the Cape Breton Hospice.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Donald MacLeod and Margaret (Morrison) MacLeod. Dougie enjoyed a long and dedicated career in the oil and gas industry, which took him to Dartmouth, Sable Island, Newfoundland, and Fort McMurray. He retired with many lifelong friendships formed along the way.
With his dry sense of humour and welcoming hospitality, Dougie didn’t know what a stranger was—only a friend yet to be made.
He is survived by his loving wife, Wilma; his daughter, Emily (Greg) Gill; his cherished grandsons, Connor and Liam; his brother, Gordon MacLeod (Shaune, predeceased); as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and coworkers.
Dougie was predeceased by his son, Neil Stuart; his brother, Kenny; his in-laws, Michael and Betty MacMullin; his nephew, Kirk MacLeod; and many dear friends who were considered family.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, Cape Breton Hospice, and VON. A special thank you to Dr. D’Intino, Brett Gillis, and Amanda of VON for their compassion and care.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held in the summer, where family and friends will gather to raise a glass to truly one of the great ones.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cape Breton Hospice or a local food bank would be appreciated.
With a wink and a grin, he drew the world near,
A dry little joke, a smile so sincere.
No stranger too new, no friend left behind,
A heart full of laughter, gentle and kind.
Our great one has gone, but his memory will stay,
In the hearts of all who loved him, each and every day.
