Elizabeth (Betty) MacLean

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Elizabeth (Betty) MacLean, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend on Thursday, January 16th, 2025.
Born on May 4th, 1927, in Sydney Mines, Mom was the daughter of the late Josephine (Harrietha) and Walter Doyle. A devout Catholic, with a strong, unwavering faith, she was a member of Holy Family Parish. Mom grew up in Sydney Mines, attended Normal College in Truro which afforded her a rewarding teaching career of 30 plus years on the Northside. She often spoke of many fond memories of her former students throughout the years.  
Hiking, quilting, reading, skating, concerts, travelling with her sisters and family get togethers are just a few of Mom’s favorite pastimes. She always had a plan for her next adventure and was up for just about anything.  
Family was so very important to Mom. In her home she provided a place of love and comfort for her children and grandchildren. She loved their visits and the great conversations that ensued. The tea was always ready, and she was the best listener, giver of sound advice and biggest supporter of her children and grandchildren. She treated everyone the same, loved everyone the same and instilled this in her family.
Mom is survived by her children, John Hugh (Carol Ann), Joanne, Charlotte (Kevin), Jane (Bernie), Lilly (Jack), Sammy (Jennifer), grandchildren, Monique (Josh), Melissa (Doug), Lisa, Leonard (Erin), Stephen, Catherine (Raymond), Michael (Courtney), Janelle (Jason), Thomas (Machaela), Daniel, Matthew (Cally), Katie, Sarah (Paul), Brendon (Blaire), Iain (Kaitlyn), Rylan (Brandy), 9 great-grandchildren, as well as one sister, Anne and two brothers, Leo and Jim (Maureen).
Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her husband, Samuel (Buster), sisters, Medie (Hector) Boutlier, Lucy (Sam) Lamey, Nellie (Neil) MacPhee, Monica (Woody) Ramsay, brothers Edward (Nora), Jackie, sisters-in-law Mary Ann Doyle, Bessie (Mike) MacDonald, Charlotte MacLean, brothers-in-law Vince Isaac, Vern MacLean, son-in-law Steven Dowling as well as her beloved great-granddaughter, Shaylynn Dowling.
Many thanks to all who took such wonderful care of Mom during her stay in hospital and long-term care. Special thanks to Maureen, Carolyn and Brenda.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025, at 11:00 am at Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines.
