Elizabeth Simpson Obituary

Elizabeth “Betty” Simpson, age 83, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026. Born on August 15, 1942, in St. John’s, Newfoundland, she was the beloved daughter of the late William and Annie (O’Neill) Dunne.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, William Simpson; her brother, Leo Dunne; her sister, Joan Power; and her niece, Juanita Dunne.

She leaves behind a family who loved her deeply, including her son, William Simpson (Denise); her daughter, Bobbi Power (Mike); her brother, David Dunne (Betty); her grandchildren, Danielle Simpson and Natasha Power; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Jasper, Ember, Killian, Octavian, Arlo, Nevaeh, Charleigh, and Aria. She will also be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, as well as close friends whose lives she touched throughout the years.

Betty spent many years working as a Program Coordinator with the Resi-Care Association. She had a natural gift for caring for others and treated every individual she supported with kindness, patience, and respect. To Betty, they were never just clients — they were people she truly cared about, and she made sure they felt valued and supported.

While her work meant a great deal to her, the Royal Canadian Legion was especially close to her heart. Breton Branch 008 in Sydney Mines became her second home and second family. Through the Legion, Betty found friendship, purpose, and a community to which she remained devoted for more than 40 years.

Over the years, she served in many roles at the branch, district, and provincial levels. Betty was especially proud of her work as a Service Officer, helping veterans and their families navigate the supports they deserved. Whether she was assisting a veteran in securing funding, raising money for the Poppy Fund, supporting the Veterans’ Wing at Harbourview Hospital, or simply listening to someone who needed guidance, Betty was always ready to lend a hand. Even after retiring, she never hesitated to take a call and help point someone in the right direction.

Visitation will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion, Sydney Mines Branch 008, on March 18 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., with a service to follow. A reception will be held at the Legion afterward, where family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Betty’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to the Veterans’ Wing at Harbourview Hospital or the Haley Street Society.

Betty’s kindness, dedication, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed, but the warmth she shared and the lives she touched will remain with us always.
