We, the family of Elva Strickland, regret to announce her passing on Saturday, June 15th, 2024, at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by her family.
Elva was born in Sydney Mines on Dec 31st, 1934, and was the daughter of the late Elmer and Freda (Crowther) Roper.
Elva loved to play cards and traveled near and far for a good game of 45’s. She belonged to the women's Thursday night club and the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club. Her family nicknamed her the road runner as she was on the go seven days a week. Elva was very involved with their family. She talked to her sisters every day on the phone and always loved to give advice. She was a wonderful grandmother, never missing an after-school pickup or a sleepover on Christmas Eve. She was a great baker, and there were always lots of sweet treats around the house.
Elva is survived by her daughter Lynn (Bill) MacIver, her two grandchildren Andrea (Simon) and Brett MacIver, her two sisters Beverly (Mike) Wade and Elaine (Allister) MacKeigan, and her brother Elmer (Sandra) Roper. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Dawn (Brian) MacKinnon, Tracy (Michelle) Cavanaugh, Curtis (Wendy) Roper, Troy (Kim) Roper, and Nicloe (Paul) Sampson.
Elva was predeceased by her husband, Roland, and Infant daughter Kimberly, as well as her parents, Elmer and Freda (Crowther) Roper. She was also predeceased by her best friend and card partner, Shirley MacLean.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the girls in MacEachern Place at the Northside Community Guest Home. They are truly special people and they treated mom with love and kindness. We are forever grateful.
As per Elva’s wishes, there will be no service or wake. Cremation has taken place. Donations in Elva’s name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Charity of your choice.
