Emmanuel Tobin (Bud) 1945-2023

It is with great sadness that we regret to announce that after a brief illness on 30 Dec, we lost our beloved Bud with his wife and family by his side.

Predeceased by his father Emmanuel Tobin, mother Edith, sisters Linda and Marjorie, nephew Aaron as well as his in-laws Alexander and Elsie MacLean.

He is survived by his wife Carol, daughter Jennifer Trainor (Dave) of Petawawa, On and grand-children Jack and Julia. He is also survived by daughter Angela Randall (Mike) of Fredericton, NB and grand-children Charleigh and Avery. Also left to mourn are his siblings Freddy(Debbie), Danny (Linda), Dennis (Geralyn), Susan Cullen (Bryan) and uncles Gerald Tobin (Cubby) and Henry Ford (Shirley) as well as nephews, nieces and extended family.

Bud was born on 5 Sept 1945 in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton and was the eldest of seven siblings. At the age of 14 he met the love of his life, Carol (MacLean), where they went on to enjoy 56 years of marriage. At the age of 17, Bud joined the Canadian Armed Forces where he had a storied career, serving honourably with The Royal Canadian Dragoons for 30 years from 1964-1994. He saw postings in Gagetown, Germany, and Calgary. He had many notable achievements in his career such a completing the French Commando Course and completing the Nigmegan marches in the Netherlands.

An exceptional natural athlete, Bud was known for his prowess in hockey, ball and high physical fitness levels. Upon retirement from the military, Bud and Carol returned to their hometown of Sydney Mines, where Bud was employed as a commissionaire with the Canadian Coast Guard College for 23 years.

Upon retirement from the Coast Guard College, Bud was a mainstay throughout the community, where he could often be seen telling stories with friends and strangers alike.

Bud was a jack-of-all-trades who had an unbridled energy and zest for life. His 30-year volunteer work with the Feral Cat Society earned him recognition throughout the community. Bud was a friend to all, always with a smile, who could brighten anyone's day. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank the ER and palliative care staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their concern and the care Bud received during his brief hospital staff.

A visitation for Bud will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2024, from 4 pm to 7 pm at JM Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A Funeral mass to celebrate his life will be held Thursday, January 4, at 11 am, in Holy Family Hall, Sydney Mines. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cape Breton Feral Cat Society.
