Evelyn Gouthro Obituary

On May 6, 2025, our beautiful mom and angel left us to journey home at the age of 81 years. She will always be treasured and remembered for her kind and loving nature.

Evelyn Marie Gouthro was born in Sydney Mines to parents Alfred and Jennie (Campbell) Coll on October 20,1943. She was a long-standing resident of that community for most of her life.

Mom was affectionately known as “White Nanny” by her great granddaughter and partner in crime Mya. The reference was because of her white hair. She was also known to family and friends as simply “Evie”.

She was unique in many ways as well as very independent until her dementia progressed. She enjoyed daily and weekly shopping trips to the grocery and clothing stores. She loved keeping up with the latest fashion trends and buying more food than she knew what to do with. She also enjoyed going for long drives, swimming at the Northside Community Pool and dining out with family and friends. During visits to the homestead, she could often be found hanging clothes out on the line, feeding the birds outside, cleaning, listening to the radio, doing crosswords puzzles, watching the news or the Young and the Restless. You certainly could not interrupt her during her soap opera moments. Mom had a vastly strong personality. We would often joke how she loved to offer unsolicited advice as well as stand firm in her convictions even when she was in the wrong which according to “Evie” she never was. Mom was a caregiver and best friend to her granddaughter whom she referred to as “My Alyssa”. She cared and supported her during many of her challenging moments. She taught her to persevere in the face of adversity as well as to be respectful toward herself and others. Mom was also incredibility humorous and fun. She loved to play jokes especially on April fool’s day. She took great pride and enjoyment in knowing that she played you. Her laugh was indeed contagious, and her smile would light up any room. She was in every way precious and imperfectly perfect.

Most close to her knew she had a profound love of animals, especially for those she cared for over the years which were Oz, Minnie, Mitzy, Dino, Yogi, Chico and Fluffy.

She was a homemaker for many years. She was also employed at National Sea Products limited in North Sydney for a short period of time. She left her position as a fish cutter to care for her husband and our dad during his cancer illness.

Mom is survived by her three children Todd (Stephanie) Gouthro of Sydney, Dr. Jim (Sandy) Gouthro of Halifax and Heather Gouthro of Sydney Mines. She is also survived by her grandchildren Alyssa (Michael), Hailey (Ramy), Quinn and Jenna, as well as her great grandchildren Mya and Oaklen.

Mom is also survived by her son-in-law Charles Ivey, sister Katherine (Buddy) Pyke and brother Jimmy (Susan) Coll of Ottawa.

Mom was predeceased by her beloved daughter Kim Ivey who passed away on May 1, 2025. She was also predeceased by her parents and husband Frank Gouthro who passed away in 1985.

As per mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be arranged at a later date. Donations can be made in her memory to the local branch of the SPCA.

The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home for their exceptional care and comfort to mom. Also, heartfelt appreciation is extended to Dr. Peter Poulos for his kindness and care for her over the years.

“To our mom and Nanny, thank you for the beautiful memories. Your playful, sweet and passionate spirit will forever be cherished”.
