Frances Mitchelitis

It is with deep sadness and heartfelt love that we announce the passing of Frances Mitchelitis, age 80, who passed away peacefully on November 30, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by those who loved her.

Born in Sydney Mines on February 8, 1945, Frances was the beloved daughter of the late Theresa Eileen Barrie and Aubrey MacKinnon. She spent most of her life in Florence, where she built her home, raised her family, and created a lifetime of cherished memories.

Frances was best known for her warm nature, quiet strength, and deep devotion to her family. She shared a special and inseparable bond with her mother, Theresa, who often spoke of the joy and comfort Frances brought into her life. Frances carried that same kindness forward through every stage of her life, touching many with her gentle spirit.

She will be forever missed by her loving son Gordon, her daughters Dawn, Noreen and Mary Katherine, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and the many friends who were blessed to know her. Her passing leaves a space that cannot be filled, but her love, humour, and resilience will live on in the stories shared and memories treasured.

In addition to her parents, Frances was predeceased by her son Anthony, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins who welcomed her home with open arms.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their compassionate care during Frances’s final days.

At her request, there will be no visitation. A private family gathering will be held at a later date to honour Frances’s life.
