FRANCES LOUISE (SHINNERS) PYE

Sydney Mines

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Frances Louise (Shinners) Pye announces her peaceful passing on March 11, 2023, at 85 years of age. Born on June 10, 1937, in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Frances was the daughter of the late Harold and Angelus (Robinson) Shinners. Frances was a devoted wife to the love of her life of 67 years, Ronald (Butch) Pye.

Loving mother of Ronnie (Wanda), Howie (Darlene), Rick (Barb), Derek (Helen), Vernon (Cathy), Angela (Scott) Chapman, Adele (Frankie) Sampson, proud grandmother of Jeff (Sarah), Stephen (Natasha), Jonathan (Kaitlin), Matthew (Raylene), Brett (Rene), Jessica, Christopher (Emma), Nathan (Chelsea), Sara (Adam), Jack, Michael, Samantha (Aaron), Kylie, Ryan, and Jennifer.  Great-grandmother (Nanny G.G.) of Gavin, Bryson, Emily, Sophia, Ayden, Aria, Henry, Theo, Benjamin and awaiting the arrival of two new great-grandchildren.

Frances is survived by her sisters Yvonne Struthers (ON), Ellen Cullen (BC), Angela (Dave) Guy, Georgie (Jim) Cogan, brothers-in-law Bill (Nell) (ON), Johnny (Vee), Bob (Jim) (ON), sisters-in-law Wilma (Fred) Osmond, Judy Parks, Linda (MacDonald) Pye and many nieces and nephews that she thought the world of.  Mom is also survived by her best friend Edna MacDonald.  Frances was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Angelus, sisters Mona Geddes and Lorraine Francis, Rose McInnis, brothers-in-law Alvin Higgins, Stan Struthers, Sonny Cullen, Vernon Geddes, Doug Francis, Hughie Parks, Neil Pye, niece Sandy Pye and nephews  Kevin Parks and Brad Pye.

Frances was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and was sure to pray for family and friends every night with her many Novenas. In her younger years, Frances enjoyed participating in bowling leagues at which she excelled.  She was a member of the Florence Ladies Auxiliary, an avid swimmer at the Northside Community Pool, where she had many friends, and she spent many summers at Florence Beach with her children as well as the many cousins and friends that would tag along.  Mom enjoyed Saturday night dances with dad at the Florence Firehall and card games (known as “the fights”) with Butch, Edna, Ding, Wilma, and Freddie.   While raising her own children, Frances was also a second mother to the many children she babysat over the years. In later years, Frances enjoyed a good book and following her family and friends via Facebook on her “machine” (tablet).

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care and compassion our mother received during her illness.  Thank you to EHS, CBRH ER, Dr. Laith Shimon, Dr. Siva Thanamayooran, Dr. Andrew Wawer and staff of 4W NSG, Dr. Lisa MacInnis, Dr. Megan Keeting and staff of 4A CBRH, Physio and OT staff, staff and volunteers of An Cala Palliative Care and the Osprey Angels (sitters).   Special thanks to sister-in-law Judy Parks for her love to mom over the years, especially these last few weeks, special niece Ann Frances McGean who was always a phone call away, and home-care worker Wanda Lovell who became such a great friend to mom.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements are under the care of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. There will be no visitation. A mass of celebration will take place at St Joseph Catholic Church, North Sydney, Tuesday, March 14th at 11 am with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating.

A reception will be held at the Florence Legion following the mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in memory to the Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Words of comfort and love can be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.

The Angels called their sister home

To a Heaven that she held so close

And now this earthly orb seems less

To the loved ones that her life has blessed

So, we shed our tears of loss

For a wife, a mother to many, a sister to all

Who at last answered her Lord's call.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
How do you know Frances (Shinners) Pye?
We are sorry for your loss.
Help others honor Frances's memory.
