It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Geraldine Walker, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick on April 17, 2026, surrounded by love in the presence of family.
Born on January 24, 1934, in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Geraldine was the beloved daughter of the late Frank and Mary McKenna. As the eldest of seven siblings, Geraldine felt that life in the McKenna house on Forrest Street provided an idyllic childhood, rich with traditions and adventures with relatives and friends.
Geraldine graduated in 1954 from the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing with academic honors. She thoroughly enjoyed her clinical placements at the Toronto General Hospital and Halifax Infirmary; however, was eager to return to Cape Breton to begin her career as a Registered Nurse.
In 1957, Geraldine married her high school sweetheart, George Walker, and became a proud mother to Scott and Joyce. They built a beautiful life together, with summers spent making cherished memories at the cottage in Ingonish with their children and grandchildren.
Geraldine’s nursing career spanned 40 years, most of which were spent at Northside General Hospital. Friendships forged in the hospital environment were lifelong, and she treasured her monthly social gatherings with fellow nurses and colleagues.
Early retirement allowed Geraldine and George to travel across North America, wintering in Arizona and Florida. In each new place they created lasting friendships and discovered fabulous flea market deals.
Ever quick witted, Geraldine could light up a room with a well-timed comment, raised brow, or a playful grin. Her home was a place where people gathered, stories were shared, and no one ever left her kitchen hungry.
A devout Catholic and daily communicant, Geraldine volunteered in her parish and had served her community as a Eucharistic Minister, church lector, and as a dedicated member of the Congregation of Notre Dame Associates. She lived her beliefs and was often the friend that people called in the middle of the night—because they knew she could be relied upon to show up in the ways that mattered most.
Upon her arrival in heaven, Geraldine was joyously greeted by her late parents, husband George, only son Scott, parents-in-law Katie and Neil Walker, Sybil and Jim Vickers, sisters Helen Woroby and Ann Marie McKenna Crevier Randle, brothers Frank, Blaise, and Louis Adrian McKenna, sisters-in-law Marguerite Cullinane, Donna McKenna, and Joan Tracey, brothers-in-law James Cullinane, Jacob (Buddy) Ferguson, Mike Woroby, Roland Randle, Charlie Keagan, Ken Betts, Walter Ryba, and many long-time friends.
Geraldine will be deeply missed by daughter-in-law, Sylvia (late Scott) of Sussex, N.B, and their daughter Jessica (Mathieu), daughter, Joyce (Jeff) of St. Stephen, N.B. and their children Erin (Devin), Megan, and Ian Haley. She is survived by her brother Michael McKenna (Sally); brothers-in-law Dave (Marlene) Farrell, Joe Tracey, Jim (Linda) Mischook, sisters-in-law Barbara Evans (Jack), Maddie Ferguson, Eleanor Betts, Peggy Ryba, and Bernadette Keagan; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise for their steadfast care throughout the years. In addition, we remain grateful to the staff, nurses, and doctors at Lincourt Manor in St. Stephen, who cared for Geraldine during her brief residence.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, May 17th 1-3 pm, at J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines. The funeral service will be held Monday, May 18th, at 11am in Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines. Reception to follow. Words of comfort may be sent to the family by visiting the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home website.
