It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Gordon Charles Haggett, age 82, of Sydney Mines.
Gordon was born January 23, 1944 in North Sydney to Charles and Matilda(MacLellan)Haggett.
Gord grew up in North Sydney and started his love of gardening working at Green's farm at age 11. From a very young age, Gord's incredible work ethic and commitment to doing the job right the first time was evident. As a young man he travelled to Ontario and the United States to work any job he could find, doing everything from carpentry, electrical, and pipefitting, finally settling back where he loved most in Cape Breton. Because of his creative mind and wanting control over quality and excellence, he started his own business of welding and fabrication in his basement. As his reputation grew, so did his business and he was widely known as the "go to" guy; if Gord couldn't fix it, or build it, it couldn't be done. His business was run exactly as his life, honestly with integrity and dedication to the absolute highest quality possible. There is not a community in Cape Breton where you cannot see something Gord built and it gives us great comfort knowing there are reminders of him everywhere we go.
A true gentle man of great kindness, loyalty, honesty and integrity, Gord worked hard, loved fiercely and forgave easily. His greatest joy was his family, known affectionately as Dad, Papa and GingerPapa by his children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren.
Gord was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Matilda (MacLellan)Haggett; siblings Audrey,Jack,Harold,Jean,Shirley and Marion; his grandson Joshua Donovan as well as his father and mother in law Henry and Anna (Walker) Finney. He is survived by one sister Alice.
He will be forever cherished, loved and missed by his wife of 62 years Shirley(Finney)Haggett, his daughters Kathy Haggett and Tammy(Roy)Clark, his grandchildren Kendra (James), Cheyenne (Shauntel), and Matthew (Erynn) and his great grandchildren Brooklynn, Jaelyn, Olivia, Kyleigh, Jesse and Laceigh.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Dawn Brown, Dr. Hewlett, Dr. Alexander Wawer and the nursing staff of 2 West at Northside General Hospital for their kindness, care and professionalism. We would also like to thank the renal dialysis nursing staff at Northside General Hospital for the amazing care and compassion they provided for Gord over the last three years, becoming another family to him. He held a special place in his heart for each and every one of "his girls". We are forever grateful for all of you.
Cremation has taken place and visitation for Gord will be held Thursday May 7th, 2026 from 6-8 pm at Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
