It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Harold “Tubby” Schofield, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, caring brother, and loyal friend.
Born and raised in New Minas, Tubby carried the values of hard work, kindness, and family throughout his life. After marrying his soulmate and the love of his life, Bernadette, the two built a beautiful life together in Sydney Mines, where they created a home filled with love, laughter, and memories that will be cherished forever.
Tubby was a hardworking man who spent many years in construction, helping build and repair countless homes throughout the community. He took great pride in his craftsmanship and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Tubby could often be found at Robin's Donuts enjoying a coffee with his buddies, catching up on news, and sharing a joke or two. He was known for his warm heart, easy-going nature, and genuine care for others. Tubby also had a collection of funny T-shirts that perfectly matched his sense of humor. Everywhere he went, people would stop to read his shirts and share a laugh — something he always enjoyed. He was also known for having the best dance moves, and once Tubby made his way to the dance floor, there was no getting him off it. Whether at a family gathering, wedding, or community event, he brought energy, laughter, and fun everywhere he went.
For the past 2.5 years, Tubby was a resident of Miners Memorial Manor. His family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff for the kindness, compassion, and exceptional care they provided to Tubby during his time there. The love and support shown to him and his family will never be forgotten, and words cannot express how thankful we are to everyone who played a part in his care.
Above all else, Tubby deeply loved his family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Bernadette; his son, Brian; his parents, Hughie and Hazel (Jennex) Schofield; and his brother, Junior. He is also predeceased by his mother and father-in-law, Tommy and Roseann (McBride) Hall; sisters-in-law, Patrice McKeigan (Andy) and Claire Fraser (Rene); and brothers-in-law, John Pius and Gregory.
He leaves behind his daughter, Joanne (Kenny); his cherished grandchildren, Mitchell and Kate; and grand dog Cassie, who always brought a smile to his face.
He is also survived by his siblings: Darlene (Dewey), Linda (Ralph), Bernice (Doug), Betty, Marilyn (Archie), and Margaret (Darren).
He will be missed by his many brothers- and sisters-in-law: Maureen (Joe Boutilier), whom he thought of and raised as his own daughter; Paddy (Pamela); Rose (Rizzie) Stewart (Corrie); Edna MacDonald (Wayne); and John Wilson, all of Cape Breton; Gerald of Saskatchewan; Theresa Ann Stewart (Dave) of Alberta; and Catherine McArthur (John) of Prince Edward Island.
Tubby’s love, guidance, humor, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the homes he built, the lives he touched, and the family he treasured so dearly.
Following his wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Saturday May 30th at JM Jobes Funeral Home. Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., with a service to follow at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be held afterward at Holy Family Church Hall. All who knew Tubby are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tubby’s memory may be made to the Haley Street Adult Service Centre in North Sydney, Miners Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines, Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, or a charity of your choice.
