Helen Burton Obituary

Helen Euphemia Burton

July 26, 1950 – March 4, 2024 (age 73)

St. Margaret Village

It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Euphemia (MacKinnon) Burton announce her passing on March 4, 2024 at Buchanan Memorial Community Health Centre, guided by her faith and surrounded by the love of family and the deep care shown by her many nurses and doctors.

Born July 26, 1950 in Black Point, Victoria County, later moved to nearby Bay St. Lawrence, Helen was the daughter of the late Simon and Cassie (MacLellan) MacKinnon. In earlier years, Helen lived in Manitoba before returning to St. Margaret Village to marry and raise her children. She opened a family business and found rewarding employment, most recently at a local store, where she took great pride in her work and especially appreciated working close to her home. Helen showed a natural ability to connect with others and a willingness to share vulnerabilities, celebrating the joys of life and learning from the hardships, which resulted in lasting friendships. Family and friends will remember her thoughtfulness, often expressed with a unique gift or card. They will also rarely spot a cardinal without recalling Helen’s profound affection for the songbird.

A favourite pastime of Helen’s was walking, sometimes with family or friends, often on her own, taking to the trail or a rural road, enjoying the outdoors and appreciating her time by the ocean, at times pausing for a conversation full of joy and laughter with her dear friends and neighbours. She enjoyed local events, regional music and dance, and provincial and national news stories, also stories of impact on the concerns she cared about, particularly mental health and wellness. A dedicated volunteer, Helen contributed to her community in countless ways, for the most part through service as a lifelong member of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, St. Margaret Village. Devoted to her family, Helen loved her husband and three children, finding great meaning and intention as a mother in encouraging her children to live good, full lives with love and kindness. Her greatest joy in life was to be near her five grandchildren, showing them a love without end.

She leaves behind her husband of 48 years, Andre; daughters, Tammy and Stacy (Mani); a son, Joel (Michelle); grandchildren, Cassie, Mehran, Maral, Penelope, and Linden; a brother, John Roy; sisters, Mary Jane (Greg) and Jessie (Joe); sisters-in-law, Debbie, Gail, Frances, and Pam; and nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by a sister, Betty; brothers, Paul, Lloyd, and Hector; a special brother-in-law, Wilson; a nephew, Joey and grand-niece, Rebecca, a constant inspiration; also, son-in-law, Charlie; and a beloved mother-in-law, Elizabeth Burton.

Helen will be remembered for her courage. To know her was to be blessed beyond measure. The family would like to thank the staff at the QEII, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, and Buchanan Memorial for the compassionate care Helen received in these last number of months. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, March 9 at 12pm with visitation at 11am in the St. Margaret of Scotland Parish Church. Interment to occur at a later date in the Parish Cemetery. Memorial donations to North of Smokey Palliative Care/Hospice Society, Buchanan Memorial.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
