Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Leo was the son of the late Hughie and Cassie (Brown) Grover. A lifelong fisherman for 54 years, Leo first took to the sea with his father at just 14 years of age, beginning a connection to the water that shaped his life. He also worked in construction for several years at the Wreck Cove Hydroelectric Project. A skilled builder and restorer of wooden boats, Leo took great pride in his craft and was always eager to share his knowledge with others.
After retiring from fishing, Leo could often be found at his wharf mending gear, sitting at the bank, or lending a hand with family projects. In his later years, he enjoyed building miniature dories and crafts, sharing family suppers, and reading a good book. A natural storyteller, he was delighted in sharing tales from his many years of lived experience, leaving lasting memories with all who listened. In recent years, Leo especially missed his trips to his beloved Canso, where he cherished time spent with family.
Leo was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of 54 years, Mary Claire (Fitzgerald) Grover. He was a proud and loving father to Kim (Kenny), Conrad (Lisa), William (Melissa), and Lana (Harry). A cherished grandfather, he will be deeply missed by Vanessa, Ryan, Kendell, Mallory, Chandler, Ethan, and Jasmine, and his great‑grandchildren Oaklyn, Rowan, Alexander, Christopher as well as his daughter-in-law Lisa’s children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his brother Nick (Maureen). His niece Bethany; his nephews Jeffery & Chris; and many other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters‑in‑law Christine, Cheryl, Bonnie, and Angela. He will also be remembered by many other relatives, dear friends, and special loved ones.
Leo was predeceased by his parents; his sister Mary Frances; his brothers Bernie, Ira, Melvin, and Brian; his nephew Shane Grover; and his special cousin Paul Veilleux.
As per Leo’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of JM Jobes Funeral Home,. A family gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Society at Buchanan Memorial Hospital. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
If love could have built a dory, he would have fished forever.
