Jack Thiele Obituary

It is with shock and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jack Thiele (83yrs) of Murray Road, North River, Cape Breton, following a brief illness on Friday, April 17, in the palliative care unit at Victoria County Memorial Hospital.

Jack was married to the love of his life for 55 years and was a devoted family man, deeply proud of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, JeanE (Bruce) of Sydney; daughter, Dr. Amy M. Thiele of Barrie, Ontario; and son, James Whitney Thiele (Brooke Omstead) of Wheatley, Ontario. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: William Oliver, Alexa Rae, Isla Whitney, and Elizabeth (Ellie)Ainslie Thiele. Jack was predeceased by his brothers Wolfgang, Fritz, and Klaus, and his sister Jutta.

Jack was a fully apprenticed aircraft mechanic, arriving in Canada at the age of 19 from Hamburg, West Germany. He began his career at Boeing in Arnprior, Ontario and, driven by his curiosity and determination, continued his education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree (major in Physics) from Carleton University in Ottawa.

His passion for engineering and construction led to a fulfilling career in Ottawa and Halifax, and later with Zutphen Brothers in Mabou. Alongside his wife Jeannie, he proudly owned and operated the St. Ann’s Lobster Galley for 45 years.

Known affectionately as “MacGyver,” Jack had an extraordinary ability to fix, build, or improvise almost anything. He was truly one of a kind—both a people person and an introvert, with a deep love for home. When asked where he was from, he would often smile and say, “Heaven.”

Jack was an avid gardener, growing black and red currants each year to make his well-loved homemade jam. He was known for ordering a double dark rum—no ice—and for getting a crowd going with his “happy feet,” whether at the Doryman, the Legion, or his favorite spots in Florida. He proudly called himself a Cape Breton ambassador, always sharing smiles and hugs wherever he went.

He also enjoyed making cheesecakes and rum cakes, playing golf for many years, and solving Sudoku puzzles. A voracious reader, he especially loved mystery, science fiction and adventure novels.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be announced for late spring.

In Jack’s memory, donations may be made to the Hospice Society of Victoria County (hospicevc@gmail.com.   PO Box 279, Baddeck, NS, B0E 1B0), or your local Canadian Legion, or for friends and neighbours in Indianwood, Florida, to any local American Legion fundraising events.
