James Lawrence Heidl
It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of James Lawrence Heidl, 93, who passed away peacefully on June 2, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, palliative care. Born in Sydney Mines on January 26, 1931, James was the son of the late Frank and Ashley (Dawe) Heidl.
Dad was a kind and gentle man who lived his faith and was loved by many in his church community, Grace Fellowship. He rarely missed a Sunday (pre-COVID), greeting people before the service, and had a positive influence on the young people there.
During Jimmy’s working years, he was employed as a clerk and worked in the office at the Princess Mine for 41 years. While he enjoyed a long retirement, his memory for numbers impressed those who knew him long after he retired. There was a good chance Dad would still know your employee number if he met you in town years later.
As an avid fly fisherman who fished the Margaree River for over 60 years, Dad was most relaxed when standing waist-deep in water, deciding which fly to cast. Some of his best friendships (Kenny, Carl, Lou) over the years were formed on the river, talking fish and flies. He was an exceptional fly tire.
Besides his parents, Frank and Ashley, James is predeceased by his sister Shirley.
While James enjoyed a long life as a devoted husband and father, he is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Carolyn, and his only daughter, Jane, along with several sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Kelly at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, to Dr. Andrew Wawer for his years of care, and to the Northside Homemakers Service for their months of care and support.
Cremation has taken place in accordance with Dad’s wishes. There will be a visitation on Monday, June 10, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., with a service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Fellowship Church, 3 Meadowbrook Drive, Sydney Mines, conducted by Pastor Rick Barnes. The burial will take place at a later date.
Funeral services have been entrusted to JM Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main Street, Sydney Mines. To view the online obituary or to send words of comfort to the family, please visit www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
We ask that masks be worn and will be provided.
