James Devoe Obituary

It is with broken hearts that we, the family of James Thomas “Tommy” Devoe, announce his passing on January 12, 2026, at the Halifax Infirmary.

Born in Sydney Mines on December 12, 1947, Tommy was the son of the late James and Victoria (MacKinnon) Devoe.

In his younger years, Tommy worked as a coal miner in Princess Colliery in Sydney Mines, then on the lake boats, and finally retired from CN in Alberta after 30 years of service.

Tommy was known as a hard worker and a kind and generous person. Although having no children of his own, he sponsored two children per year for 50 years through World Vision and inspired others to do the same. He was also very spiritual, prayed every day, and his faith helped him through the tough times in his life.

Tommy also helped many family and friends with a place to stay or any other needs when they came to Alberta. He had a heart of gold for everyone.

Tommy is predeceased by his mother, Victoria; father, James; brother, Tony; and sisters, Patricia and Theresa. He is survived by his close family: brothers Charlie (Donna), Roddie, Joe, and James (Julie); and sisters Mary Ellen, Barbara (John), Debbie, Faith, and Trisha (Nino). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom he loved dearly.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Halifax Infirmary for their compassionate care during his final days and extend a special thanks to Mary Ellen for caring for Tommy through his many health issues and being his 24-hour caregiver over the past 10 years.

As Tommy would often say to his family and friends:

“You’re capital A1 in my books.”
Well Tommy — you’re capital A1 in our books too.

As per Tommy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral service and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date..
