Jason Francis McCready, a cherished resident of Big Harbour, Cape Breton, passed away at His home on April 3, 2025, at the age of 49. Born on May 12, 1975, in Sydney Mines, Jason was known for his adventurous spirit, magnetic personality and warm heart. He was a devoted son to Theresa McCready and is now reunited in peace with his father, Frank McCready, and brother, Pat McCready.
Jason's life was marked by countless achievements and passions. A proud graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies, he carved a successful career as a heavy-duty mechanic with Imperial Oil, currently at Kearl site. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jason was a beloved grandfather to Captain Callahan, a role he cherished deeply.
His love for the waters of Cape Breton was undeniable, spending endless hours boating on the Bras d’Or Lakes. A real pirate at heart. Jason's passion for NAUI scuba diving, shipwreck exploration, and treasure hunting was matched only by his fascination with UFOs and Cape Breton history. He was a fearless goaltender when playing hockey. Music was another of Jason's great loves, and he often filled the air with the soulful sounds of his guitar and harmonica, drawing inspiration from his favorite artists, Jimmy Buffett and John Prine.
An active member of his community, Jason dedicated some time to Souls Harbour mission work and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need, he loved his neighbours. His friends and family remember him as funny, adventurous, courageous, and humble, qualities that endeared him to everyone who knew him.
Jason leaves behind his loving mother, Theresa McCready (Robert), his sister, Melanie McCready, and his sons, Jordan Giao and Arlen Hurley. Neices Isabella and Andreea Cercel and many friends. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his adventurous spirit will continue to inspire.
Cremation has taken place. The remains have been entrusted to Jobes Funeral Home. A Roman Catholic Funeral will be held on May 3, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines, with a luncheon afterwards. He will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Sydney.
In closing, we reflect on a life well-lived with the words of Jimmy Buffett: "Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way." Jason's journey was indeed a blend of magic and adventure, and he will be dearly missed.
