We regret to announce the peaceful passing of Jean Atkinson, 96, on Saturday, April 10, 2021, at the Miner’s Memorial Manor. Born in Sydney Mines on June 4, 1924, Jean was the daughter of the late Daniel and Carrie (Wolstenholme) Maxwell.
She moved to England as a war bride in 1944 and returned to Canada in 1978. Jean retired from Harbour View Hospital in 1989. She enjoyed travelling, especially to Calgary and England. She always had a book to read, enjoyed a good laugh and loved her cup of tea.
Jean is survived by her son David (Debbie) Atkinson (Cole Harbour), brother William Maxwell (Dartmouth) and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her daughter Carol Bates (England), daughter Shirley Lisle (England), grandson Gary Lisle (England), granddaughter Julie Bates-Simpson (England), sisters Barbara, Ester, Annie, Violet and brother Alex (Maxie) (all of Cape Breton).
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date. Donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Salvation Army or a charity of your choice. Jean’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the kind and devoted doctors, nurses and staff of the Miner’s Memorial Manor.
