Joe Oram Obituary

Joseph “Joe” Oram

Florence.

We regret to announce the passing of Joseph "Joe" Oram, 75, of Florence, on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, only a couple of weeks following admission for a sore leg.

He hailed from Sydney Mines and lived the balance of his married life in Florence, with maintaining his ties to Fraser Avenue. He was the son of the late Joseph and Phyllis (MacDonald) Oram.

He spent his working life as a loyal employee of Sydney Steel as an industrial mechanic, working virtually all over the plant, following the completion of his certification as a millwright from the Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Following his retirement, he took up golf, becoming a seasonal member at the Seaview Golf Club. His son had been waiting patiently to be his caddy once he made it big!  Aside from the greens, summers were treasured at the bungalow, having passed many swims and campfires. His long passion, however, was in the Cape Breton Antique & Custom Car Club, where he proudly sported his '73 Challenger 340 4-barrel, and passed over 30 years of club membership. He and George Williams enjoyed many meets, the tightest of camaraderie, and many stories. Retirement years afforded him the time to be more active in the church as a member of Wilson United Church and later Carman United Church. Of all his life roles, perhaps his favorite was as a grandfather, affectionately known as "GPa", and as such he shared card games relentlessly. Joe is survived by his son, Lorne, Ottawa; granddaughter, Jessica, Ottawa and sister, Nancy Cadwell, Little Pond, as well as his close friends, cousins, and golf partners. He was predeceased by his wife Linda, Florence; his parents Joseph and Phyllis (Macdonald) Oram.

Gracious thanks are extended to the skillful and compassionate staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. You are all so appreciated. There will not be a visitation or funeral, but rather a graveside service at a later date to be determined at Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines. No flowers, please. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. Lorne says: “Don't waste a day".
