Joe Williams Obituary

Joseph Patrick (Joe) Williams

Sydney Mines

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Joseph Patrick Williams on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at the Northside General Hospital.

Joe (Jojo) was born on September 2, 1943, the second of five children to Joseph Patrick Williams and Rebecca Williams (Clark). Born and raised in Sydney Mines, he knew everyone and everyone knew him.  Prior to his illness you could often find Joe “up the corner” talking to old and new friends.

Joe worked for Devco as a coal miner for 25 years, first at Lingan and later Prince Mine.  He still loved to share and swap stories with his friends about happenings in the Pit.

He was fortunate enough to meet the love of his life, Geraldine (Corbett) at the young age of 16 and they would remain together for 61 years, through all of the ups and downs of life, and raise 4 children Murdoch (Roblyn), Darlene (Brian) MacInnis, Wanda (Mike) Queripel and Jamie (Sonja), for whom they set an amazing example of enduring love.

Joe’s pride in his children was limitless. He was proud of their accomplishments and often shared his pride with anyone who would listen.  Joe was also an amazing “Poppy” to Sara (Logan), Matthew and Erin. He loved to cook their favourite foods, take them for treats at Joe Pecks and provide them with pocket money whenever he saw them. He watched them grow with profound joy and pride in their accomplishments.

Joe is survived by his loving wife Geraldine, sisters Carlotta Corbett and Bridget Dawe, brother Tommy, and many very special nieces and nephews, including Jimmy Clarke and Lisa Penny, whose support was very much appreciated.

Special thanks go out to Joe’s brother Tom, who dedicated time every day to care for his ailing brother, Mary-Lou and Paul Gracie whose enduring friendship and countless hours spent caring for Joe and supporting the family could never be repaid, and the amazing care and attention provided by Denise, Betty, Tracy, Shannon and Laura, who truly became family during this journey.

The family would also like to say a very special thank you to the nurses of the VON and Dr. Khodadad for the wonderful care and support provided during his illness.

In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his sister Theresa (Ginn) and four siblings in infancy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center or a charity of your choice.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 13, 2021, at 10 am in Holy Family Church, with Fr. Fabian Ihunegbo officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
